Tested positive for GBS and worried

Any of you ladies tested positive with GBS and used the antibiotics?  That is the plan for me right now.  I am so nervous about not getting them in time and nervous about my LO still getting infected or having an allergic reaction to the antibiotics.
Any encouragement you have is so appreciated!  :)

Re: Tested positive for GBS and worried

  • I am positive. As was my sister. She didn't get to the hospital in time for the antibiotics and everything turned out fine. I think they just kept her and her son a bit longer after to monitor him.

I've heard the percentage of babies that are at risk are extremely low when about 1/3 of women test positive. So it's super common in women but not at all common for it to be passed to your LO.

Don't stress about it until there is something to worry about. My doctor said to get to the hospital within an hour or two of water breaking. Considering most labours don't start with water breaking, you will more likely have plenty of notice to get to the hospital :)

  • I'm positive too, but not overly worried.  On the upside, the hospital is less likely to turn you away if you show up and are not dilated to their liking (something my hospital is notorious for, regardless of the contractions or the mother's general state).
  • I am too...am I also nervous about getting to the hospital in time. My main concern is actually knowing when I need to go to the hospital.
  • My water broke at 35w4d (which is also when I had my LO). I was unknown GBS status since it was so early. I had to get the antibiotics just in case. I had no problems with them. They did keep us a little longer to monitor LO but since she was premie, they would have kept us anyways.
  • So no issues with you or your LO? @nursej519
  • @omgthisisit nope! We both ended up being fine. I still don't know if I am positive or negative but neither of us had a problem. They said normally if they don't know, you should have a couple doses of antibiotics even but I didn't have time, as I had am extremely fast labor. Yet we were both still okay.
  • I am positive and don't plan to have the antibiotics unless there are additional risk factors. In the UK the practice is to not even test women for the bacteria. The Drs will just give the antibiotics to women who's waters broke 18 hours or more before delivering or if the mother has a fever during delivery. I'm in Canada, but am going with the Brittish protocol as my body is very sensitive to antibiotics and I want baby to receive a good, healthy supply of gut flora from me at birth.

@omgthisisit I was GBS+ and came home crying after I found out. I did research and educated myself and my husband and I made plans for x, y and z. I had my daughter 11 days ago and was admitted the night before and induced (at 40+2) because my doctor was concerned I wouldn't get to the hospital in time (I was already 5 cm and NOT in labor). It turns out pitocin didn't do a thing for me and within an hour of my doctor breaking my water, my daughter was born. It's a good thing I listened to my doctor and let her admit me the night before. We were able to get the full 1st dose and most of the 2nd dose before baby girl arrived. They kept a careful watch over my daughter to make sure she didn't develop symptoms (thankfully she's perfectly healthy). If your doctor knows you are GBS+ then they will take that into consideration. We made a plan ha as soon as I had contractions 10 minutes apart we would get to the hospital just in case. Turns out baby girl had other plans.  Good Luck and try not to worry about it.
  • Thank you @MrsS728 that is very encouraging!

  • I was in the same position, positive for gbs and upset... I didn't want to have to run to the hospital at the first sign of labor, wanted to spend some of it comfortably at home. My doctor didn't seem too concerned about it though so I did labor at home for an hour and a half before coming into the clinic... where I gave birth less than an hour later! Needless to say no time for meds/ antibiotics. I was worried about it at first and kept shouting about it haha and they were not concerned at all... think they might have given DD an antibiotic? But for all the worrying I did about being positive, it wouldn't have mattered anyway with a short labor. In sum, it's an easy thing to prevent so don't worry too much!
  • I was positive and got the hospital and pushed her out in 15 minutes (I didn't realize I was in real labor). She's fine, we had to go to the ped the day after we were discharged for a follow up and were told to watch out for high fever and trouble breathing. She was born on the 4th.
