Nausea and zofran

Hey y'all, I've been having horrible morning sickness that is lasting all day. I've tried emetrol and Dramamine but got no relief. Spoke with my doctor and he gave me a script for zofran. I've taken it twice and am feeling 100% better, but with all the hype recently about zofran and birth defects I'm nervous. My doctor says its safe anyone else taking zofran as well?

Re: Nausea and zofran

  • I take it occasionally. I've been taking it for year since before getting pregnant… I see both the high-risk OB (MFM) and a specialist for medications and pregnancy. neither of them have a problem with me taking Zofran. That's not to say that it may not change in the future, but for right now… I think science is the way to go.

  • Glad it's helped you!! I throw up about 6 times a day and if it gets worse I would take zofran too

I don't blame you for trusting your doctor but please be careful. I have a family member whose doctor said zofran was safe to take for nausea and her baby was born with club foot. I'm not saying your doctor is wrong, but I would suggest you talk to him about the abnormalities it has been known to cause in babies. Hope I could help. I hope you have a happy and healthy pregnancy and delivery!!
  • I talked to my doctor about zofran and she said you just want to take it sparingly. When it's taken every six hours (I think) like the label says then it can be dangerous.

The hype is drummed up by class action lawyers looking for their next big payday. There are no studies that directly correlate zofran use to fetal defects. Use as your doctor recommends when you need it and for as short s time as you need it: I suggest using real medical journals or up to date to gather your data on zofran. I posted a piece on zofran from up to date on one of the previous posts for zofran, you should be able to find it utilizing the search function.

  • When you are vomiting that much and loosing all your fluids, electrolytes and nutrients, its healthier to take something to control it.
  • Exactly what Nik6499 said.... I takr Zofran as well, I was hesitant until I did my homework... there are no studies proving any kind of link...
  • What @nik6499 said.
My husband and I had a huge debate about this after he heard some radio commercial from law offices looking to file a class action suit.
I not only spoke with my doctor but a professor of obstetrics at Stanford. The "studies" you are finding while googling are independent and funded by lawyers. If you look at the hard facts, there is no evidence that Zofran in any way increases the chance for birth defects any more. It is approved by the FDA for pregnant women to take, and the only thing the FDA is looking into is a condition (not related to pregnancy) that stems from 32mg doses.
With that being said it's always a scary thing to take medications during pregnancy so I follow this simple rule: small doses only when absolutely needed.
I found that taking 1/2 a dose rather than a full 4mg sometimes works just as well.
  • I'm new, but my Dr also gave me a rx for Zofran as well. Of course when I googled it you find all of these horror stories and I'm one of those women who is nervous to take anything. I trust my Dr and he listened to my worries. He's been a High Risk OB/GYN for close to 30 years and he's on all these different medical boards.

The fact is, birth deformities well happen, with or without medication, it's just human nature to want to put the blame on something.

The only reason why he gave me the Zofran is because other medications haven't helped and this was a last ditch effort to help.
  • My doctor said they use zofran as a last resort and try not to give it to moms in the 1st trimester. That being said, I took it through my whole 1st trimester with my 4 year old son and he's fine. I'm taking diclegis this time around.

To me it was God-sent with my 15 month old 's pregnancy. I couldn't even drink water and lost close to 25 lbs in a matter of 2 months. I was put on the pill then on the pump because the pill wasn't potent enough for me. My daughter is healthy as can be and I had complete trust in what my OB was prescribing me.
Do your research and if you feel uncomfortable with it, talk to your doctor to see what other alternatives there are.
Praying your MS eases up soon :-)
  • Thanks ladies I'm a RN and have talked with our pharmacy here and some of our Dr.'s on staff and they all say take it when needed. I've only taken it like 3 or 4 times and have been able to continue to work and feel sort of human! So I'll be taking it when needed. Wishing you all the best in your pregnancy.

I share the concern with birth defects. Studies from Europe show delayed respiratory function and since my husband was boot with respiratory problems I'm not so keen on taking it. I've asked for other options .
  • I tried to go without it, too. I ended up in the emergency room for iv hydration. You can try unisom and vitamin B 6. The trade name is Diclegis. Not a lot of insurances cover it so my OB said 1/2 of a unisom and 25 mg of B 6 twice a day is about the exact same thing. I'm sleepy, but not nauseous. I do take Zofran on occasion too. The baby needs you to eat and drink.
  • I was prescribed zofran and I took all that I was supposed to but I decided I didn't want to take it anymore just because I don't really like taking medication and the best nausea remedy I promise 100% effective is ginger root heat it with three tea bags for a good hour and 20 minutes then stir Into some more water make sure you put enough sugar cause the taste is not as good if you don't chill it on ice it taste like an island tea but I put it in my yetti and sip it all day I have no sicknesses at all unless I'm not sipping it and now All I think about is food hope it helps ☺
  • I took zofran with my first pregnancy and my son is very healthy. I'm also taking it with this pregnancy as well but I don't need it as often.

This. All of this. I am a pharmacist. I'm currently taking zofran myself- it's Pregnancy Class B. There are no studies to show any adverse effects to baby from taking the medication. Good luck.

I am on zolfran now and have also been in my past pregnancies I gave birth to normal babies =)

I am on similar page... Zolfran waking up and at dinner the. 25mg B6 with 1/2unisom at night help with Nassau and vomiting so I can sleep also been helping with major headaches!
  • I took 8 out of my months worth (30). Everyone sent me messages about birth defects and i tossed them. All they did was make me sleepy anyway.
  • Fortunately I don't have any morning sickness, but my coworker had a really bad case and was put on zofran. Her baby was born with a hole in his heart.

I've read a lot about the zofran cases and the studies all seem one sided with a personal vendetta. I've also had 2 cousins who were born with a clubbed foot, from the same aunt. It's genetic, if you have one pregnancy with club foot you're more likely to have a baby with it in subsequent pregnancies. Also it's sometimes linked to spin- bifida. They chalked it up to my aunt smoking, which is a huge factor but 23 years ago smoking wasn't viewed like it is today. Not everything that these babies were born with was caused by zofran, there are other explanations for it with far more evidence to back it. Lawyers just like to put it into people's heads because the more people that hop on the bandwagon means a higher payout for them.

I was given Diclegis first. It helped me sleep but I wake up dizzy and disoriented and still sick. I've lost 15 pounds and can't eat so zofran is the next option before hospitalization

I highly doubt the hole in the heart was from the zolfran... It's been FDA approved class B safe for pregnancy....

Agreed... Also genetic disorders or just that, genetic... So it's pretty ignorant for people to think truly that zolfran can cause a genetic disorder.... Or ignorant that people are missing the fact that those disorder are infant genetic..... I have been in the NICU with my babies being born early and studying to be a NICU doc (neonatologist) so I've heard, seen and learned a lot from medical professionals....
  • I took Zofran with my first born and now I'm afraid to take it... I have had really bad all day nausea.my daughter has bad asthma (sick induced) and had a problem with her foot turning in. It corrected it self. I really hope it wasn't from the Zofran. I wish lawyers wouldn't put this in my head!
