Having trouble drinking enough water?!

Anyone having problems drinking the required amount of water? I'm lucky if I drink a bottle a day. Every time I drink water I get really nauseous. If I drink too much I throw up. I did not have this problem with my last pregnancy. Any ideas or other options to stay hydrated?

Re: Having trouble drinking enough water?!

  • I haven't had too many issues with water. I keep a bottle at my desk and try to remember to sip it all day long. Can you stomach other liquids? Maybe smoothies with lots of ice, or even watermelon? Something water-y that isn't water? That's probably not helpful, but I'm trying! lol. Good luck and hope you feel better soon!

I have been feeling this way too lately. I feel like the water just sits in a big mass in my stomach.....ugh!   maybe try adding flavor packets like crystal light or drinking sweet tea/ lemonades instead. I don't like strong/ sugary juices so I usually dilute mine half juice/drink,  half water.
  • I'm the same way- I try to sip throughout the day but the only time I can drink a lot is right before I go to bed (which is annoying because then I go to the bathroom several times during the night.
I do eat a lot of fruit, which are generally high in water content. The water I drink is also purified, which to me is much easier to drink than tap or spring water.
  • I used to LOVE water but I can't seem to get myself to drink it recently :( I'm definitely not getting the required amount but trying my best. I keep a bottle with me at work, one in the car, and one at home so I don't need to try and remember to take it with me. It's always there whether I want it to be or not!
  • I bought a tumbler that has a built in infuser at Safeway the other day. You can put fruit in the infuser and it makes the water more bearable to drink in large quantities!

  • Here are some fruits and veggies that contain a lot of water: https://healthyeating.sfgate.com/list-fruits-vegetable-high-water-content-8958.html

I've been eating a lot of cantaloupe and lovin it! I'm the same way...I don't drink enough water even before I found out we're PG. good luck!

As silly as it sounds, experiment with drinking water out of different containers, or bottles. Some people find that drinking water from a cup means it will never be drunk, while if they have a straw they can drink all day, or a bottle makes it more enjoyable to drink, or a bottle with those squirt tops. I really like evian and fiji water bottles and can chug those all day long, but set a glass of water in front of me and it will go untouched, strange but that's how it is. Also, I can not stand the way Dasani or Aquafina water taste, like metal and plastic, but the spring water tastes super yummy to me at room temperature. Sometimes for variety you can add the lemon-aid powered stuff to it so it has some flavor, maybe that will help?  Or maybe drink pregnancy safe teas, or heated water with lemon, or drink soup, or eat water based fruits and veggies like watermelon and celery? Hopefully some of those ideas might help...good luck!

YES!  So true!  Thought I was the only strange one...lol!  I can't drink too much water when it is poured into a glass but I can drink it from my sippy bottle all day long without a problem.  Even certain plastic bottles water come in I can't stand.

  • Thanks ladies I will definitely try some of these. I do eat fruit but I could use more. I tried the flavor packets in the water and it's still the same. I can't stand Dasani or Aquafina bc of the after taste. I've always liked just the Walmart store brand or spring water. I can drink other liquids no problem which is weird.
  • I put lemon and cucumber slices in my water, helps me to drink more during the day!!

  • I use a straw and it's helped me drink more! I'm not sure why but it does and the water has to be ice cold!
  • I haven't been drinking enough either! I've recently started putting fresh mint and squeezing lemon juice in the water and it has helped
  • I have been the same way. I just try to drink any liquids because it is better than no liquids (assuming they aren't all high sugar or full of caffeine). I also like certain containers better and it changes from day to day so I just keep trying different ones until I find the ones I like. For me really cold and from a large plastic cup seems to be the trick today...tomorrow who knows haha!
  • I've never tried putting anything in my water. I may have to try that!
  • There's a product called metro water. It's mint flavored water, and it's been helpful when my stomach starts to roll and I get gaggy.
  • I love water it's all I drink however water makes you vomit. So in our first trimester it's not uncommon to have a hard time. With my second pregnancy I couldn't drink it. I started drinking lemonade or Gatorade and I would pour water in to dilute it. I know it's a lot of sugar but I was really sick and felt the electrolytes prob helped too. It helped.
  • It's crazy how much they tell you to drink while pregnant. With my first the er told me to drink 6-8 of the big plastic hospital cups (the ones that are 32oz) a day of water. I had a lot of m/s with him. Until the ob put me on Zofran I couldn't even keep water down for a full minute.

I was having trouble at first. I can only drink tap water with ice. Adding lemon slices helps me as well. I think dasani and aquifina are chemically filtered and that causes the after taste. Try spring waters or other naturally filtered waters.
  • I'm only drinking about half of what I should be but what has helped me is putting it in the freezer then pulling it out when it's slushy so I half drink/half chew.
  • I'm in the same boat..drinking water makes me puke..been trying to drink ginger ale or coke..that's about all I can do
  • My doctor told me Gatorade would be good plus it will give you electrolytes!
  • Put 1 Lemon slice on your water bottle that works for me!

My water has to be ice cold for me to be able to drink it. Like frozen.

  • I've been having trouble keeping water down but have been able to drink sparkling water.. The bubbles seem to settle my stomach, and lemon or strawberries make it a little more exciting :)
  • Make sure your not drinking from a straw since that just makes you take in too much air with each sip causing fullness. Try flavoring water with fruit like lemon/strawberry/cucumber makes it easier to drink more. Also try not to drink with meals or 30min prior/after to allow your food to digest.
  • I cannot stand water inless it's from a bottle or I have heated it up with some lemon and honey. I've been drinking lots of Gatorade to stay hydrated. And I allow myself 1 small can of arizonia green tea with honey a day. Maybe add some lemon slices or lemon juice to give it some flavor. I've heard lemon helps with nausea too.

I had the same problem. Sugary drinks (lemonade & iced tea) make my tummy happy but they are sugary and I'm trying not to have too much sugar bc I had GD last pregnancy. I pretty much eat only carbs so I'm trying not to drink too many.
Anyway, I digressed...my OB told me to look for flavored seltzer water. Polar makes a ton of flavors that have no sugar and no fake sugar. Plus as an added bonus I think the bubbles curb my nausea. They smell good too!
    Good luck!
  • You have already got some good advice. I was going to suggest ice chips or freezing drinks in homemade popsicle containers.

I always thought Dasani tasted weird, here's why... https://www.naturalnews.com/001028_soft_drinks_Coca-Cola.html
Never buying Dasani or Aquafina again!

  • Have you tried coconut water?  I personally don't like it plain, but Vita Coco makes a peach mango flavored one that's pretty tasty :)

  • I had trouble drinking enough water, too, luckily it didn't make me puke, but it didn't taste good to me, and then I had some bleeding because of dehydration according to my doctor, so please, ladies, try any of the ideas in this thread, there are great btw, because staying hydrated is super important! Hopefully you will get less nauseous in a few weeks, good luck!
  • I am obsessed w/ La Croix sparkling water, tons of flavors to choose from.  No sugar, no sodium, no calories!

I've been drinking carbonated water and it's helped. I can't stomach plain water right now.

Same thing here. I'm just not a huge fan of water. I've started putting lemon wedges in my water. I read it's extremely healthy and it also helps with being nauseous. Plus it makes boring water taste a lil better. I've also noticed I preferred bottled water rather than tap. I still have to remember to drink water but this helps.

  • I cant keep water down if Im nauseous, any other time I have to use a straw and it has to be purified water, when out and about Smart Water seems to be all I can handle water wise (plus it has Electrolytes). so I started trying to find new things, I do:

    - Sweet tea (not sure sweet, otherwise the sugar will dehydrate you just as bad as soda),

    - Gatorade, anything with a mild flavor (on days Im throwing up, Ive noticed the gatorade keeps me from feeling too horrible, probably from the electrolytes)

    - Apple juice helped for a while, with bathroom issues included, have to water it down tho, or you take in alot of sugar.
