Bottle sterilizer- do I really need one?

This is my first baby and won't be having a baby shower so I'm trying to keep it low budget. Do I really need a bottle sterilizer or are there alternate ways of safely sterilizing them?

Re: Bottle sterilizer- do I really need one?

  • No. The dishwasher sterilizes them.

We bought a microwave one and was super easy!! Boiling them was a pain.

  • Good old fashioned boiling water will do the trick. Give it a google how to sterilise baby bottles and many guides will come up
  • Love the Advent microwaveable one. Totally worth it. Probably can find it used.

You don't need it, but it will make your life easier! The microwaveable ones are not too expensive and really easy to use.
  • I would consider it essential for anyone planning to formula feed. As PP has said the microwaveable ones are generally very cheap. Boiling bottles will degrade your teats quicker- in UK you can get a steriliser for the same amount as a packet of two teats so saving one packet pays for itself. The sterilising fluids often leave a taste behind that my children have never liked so for me only use those to clean accessories not bottles x

Sorry but this seems kind of gross to me.
  • I have a steam steriliser - worth every cent for how much I used it with my first.
I BF - but still needed it for expressed milk bottles/ milk storage / pacifier / pump parts etc

I would consider it a must have

Only clean items go into a sterilizer, and the sterilizer gets cleaned in the dishwasher also. Nothing gross about it IMO

I think it's just me lol, Idk why but I don't like the idea of used. I think it's the unknown X_X
  • We never used a sterilizer. We washed then in hot soapy water and had no problems.
  • It's not a requirement but I agree with PP, it will definitely make life easier. We used a microwavable one with our first (I think it was like $15, either Avent or Munchkin brand) and loved it.
  • Never used one. I don't like microwaving anything my baby is going to use. I barely used bottles, but when I did I would boil them.
  • Not necessary, esp on a budget. I used a Tommee Tippee steam one with my DD and liked it, but with this one we will probably just wash with hot water or in the dishwasher.

  • Nope, def don't need one, can boil them. I used the Medela microwave sterilizing bags last time and they were great. Can reuse Each bag a bunch of times too.

No ma'am. I just boil mine in a pot of water for the first couple months. You can also use a dishwasher and the heat and steam will wash and sterilize them for you. I suggest boiling any new bottles first anyways. Just to be safe.

Oh.. But make sure the stove is off and the pot isn't on the hot burner still... Lol I boiled my bottles like you would eggs and melted a couple once.
  • Definitely not necessary but my MIL bought us one of the microwave sterilizers and we plan on using it. I think it's more of a nice convenience thing and they aren't that expensive.
