cholestasis?

I'm 35 wks and 2days. Just this week I started experiencing really itchy skin. I thought maybe it was my lotion or spa or something. Changed everything including bedding and I'm still very itchy. Can anyone give me any hit to what's going on? Could it possibly be cholestasis? I emailed my doctor waiting for him to email me back. The office is closed for the weekend so I'm extremely frustrated now.

Re: cholestasis?

  • Hang in there, no way to really tell until you get that blood work... You could always go to ER where they will send you to LD and they would draw you right away...do you notice is especially bad on hands and feet? It can be dangerous if it is cholestasis

@shaq818 I was diagnosed with cholestasis at 28 weeks. I had a lot of itching that started on my belly but after a couple days the itching moved to my whole body but I did notice a lot on my feet and the itching is usually worse at night. The only way to test for cholestasis is a blood test which measures bile acids. Unfortunately it takes 4-5 days for the results to come back, I also had increased liver function tests (ALT & AST) but only about 40% of those diagnosed have an increase in those. With the bile acids anything over 10 is a positive diagnosis and over 40 is severe. My doctor started me on a medication called ursodiol before my bile acid results came back d/to my symptoms and then my bile acids came back severe range at 57. It's really important with this disease to be proactive. I'm on a Facebook site for icp and a lot of women have expressed that their doctors don't know anything about it or don't follow the correct guidelines for treatment. The bile acids build up in your blood and basically can poison the baby, and after 37 weeks there is a 10% chance of spontaneous stillbirth if not treated and or delivered. So it's scary!! I'm being induced at 36 + 3 dt my bile acid levels and liver function being so unpredictable. I have an ultrasound and an md appt with high risk once a week and have 2 nst's and labs drawn weekly. If anything I've said has correlated to you at all I would head to L&D and they can test you there since it's the weekend! You would want to get the ball rolling to be induced at 37 weeks and your getting close to that already!!
Good luck let me know if you have any questions!!!!
  • I had blood work done about two weeks ago. My liver function came back normal. I did have elevated chloric acid(?). The dr told me to buy benedryl cream and hydrocortisone cream. I was supposed to alternate use the benedryl cream every 4 hours and use the hydrocortisone every 2. We ended up not having to buy it because the itching has subsided A LOT. She said that being pregnant and having hormones running through my body could also be the culprit for the itching. Good luck!

@scorreia213 YEA THE ONCALL Doctor Just Called Back AND Told Me To Take BENEDRYL UNTIL I SEE My Doctor On tuesday. He said there was no need to worry right now. Im really only itchy at night which is weird. I'm just so over all these damn symptoms!
  • I've been having super itchy skin as well. Mostly on my feet and legs at night. It itches during the day, but it's worse at night. I felt like it was just me since I was the only person in our house who is constantly itchy.

@SweetnessG Have you spoken to your doctor about it yet? When did this start for you?mine just started this week at 35 weeks
  • @shaq818 I noticed mine really last week when I was 35 weeks as well. I see my doctor on Tuesday so I will be telling her about it. I had no idea this was such a thing and that it could be concerning.

@SweetnessG so I actually went to labor and delivery today. They took my blood and my liver enzyme level came back normal. Although they still have to wait for my bile results which does take 4 to 5 days they belive that it is cholestasis. They told me to just continue taking the benadryl (1 pill every 6 to 8 hrs).

@SweetnessG they think it may just be pupp which goes away normal within a week or so after delivery.
  • @shaq818 glad to hear it goes away after delivery. Does this happen to get a rash? I'm getting red bumps on my feet and ankles?! Tuesday can hurry up and get here so I can talk to my doctor.

I actually haven't developed a rash. The nurse did check to see if I had one though. But yes hopefully yall get some answers on tuesday. If anything definitely take the benadryl I haven't taken it since yesterday at 730 pm and haven't had one itch today. @SweetnessG
  • Just so you know cholestasis can cause preterm labour, even with medication, I had my blood taken 2.5 weeks ago, started on ursodiol 2 weeks ago, the itch finally went away last Monday but my water broke on Tuesday night and I delivered my twins preterm on Wednesday (34w4d). So get on meds ASAP and be prepared for anything.

Yea that was one of my concerns which is way I went in to LD. However, after my blood test results came back they have pretty much ruled out cholestasis, but I'll double check with my ob tomorrow. I'll be 36 weeks thursday. @MrsFriede

Did you blood results show that you had cholestasis or did they come back normal @MrsFriede
