Conflicted about antibiotics

I went my whole pregnancy without any meds (I think I took one Tylenol) and now at 40 weeks 5days I've developed a UTI and my doctor put me on antibiotics. I just read the warnings for it and it said to NOT take if you are pregnant and at term, or about to go into labor, and do not use during breastfeeding as it's found in breast milk. My OB prescribed it and I specifically asked the pharmacist if this was safe to take during breastfeeding and she said yes. I'm so confused. I'm going to call the doctor about it tomorrow, but was wondering what your thoughts/experiences with antibiotics were in the meantime. It's called Nitrofurantoin Mono/Mac if that means anything to anybody.

Thanks!

Re: Conflicted about antibiotics

  • I had a bacterial infection twice. Once at 36 weeks and again at 38 weeks that i had to take antibiotics for. I felt so guilty and awful for taking meds while pregnant but it's what my doctor wanted and was best for me and baby. I'm still a little worried if it has affected her in any way. I'm just going to trust that my doctor will only do what's best.

  • I'm not sure, but this may be one of those instances where you need to pick the lesser of 2 evils. The risk of an infection in you and baby may be much worse than that of the medication. Chat with your doc, and good luck!

I don't think it would be an issue but talk to your doctor. Throughout my pregnancy I didn't even want to take Tylenol but then I had a gallbladder attack that brought on contractions - the hospital team put me on low dosages of morphine and percocets and baby is doing great! As well as maximum dosages of Tylenol and Zantac at home.

I would ask your doc if there are any alternatives. Obviously you need something, but maybe there are better options for how far along you are.
  • I had a UTI earlier on, refused antibiotics and wiped it out myself with massive doses of organic, unsweetened, cranberry juice (mixed with seltzer). Cleared it right up. NOT tasty. ;)
  • I was on antibiotics twice while pregnant however the stuff I took said it was considered safe during pregnancy.

  • Also, take some
Probiotics while your on them. The pills and also get it in your food.

  • I've had to take antibiotics during both my pregnancies for various illnesses (bronchitis, strep throat, etc). Like you, I asked the doc, pharmacist and dr Google. All said it was safe.

  • Most broad range antibiotics are safe at this point (and during breastfeeding), but that's NOT to say you shouldn't check carefully the specific one you've been prescribed.  What did they give you? If the doctor, pharmacist and *reputable* literature (i.e. not someone on some forum) say it's safe, I'd believe them.  As for the baby's well being, getting the UTI treated is very important.
  • I've lost count how often I've had UTI's and been on antibiotics since being pregnant. 6 times, maybe more. Baby is still very healthy. Currently on meds for Bacterial Vaginosis, I considered skiping them, but have a irritable uterus because of it and the contractions need to be kept under control for another few days. The meds that freaked me was the muscle relaxant they have me to stop the endless 3 minute apart contractions. I took them, and baby stayed active and fine, but it scared me. A UTI can do the same thing as far as irritable uterus. I'd get it under control asap if I were you. And I agree with the probiotics and LOTS of sugar free pure cranberry juice. And lots and lots of water.
