City mamas - stroller suggestions??

Ok a bit of background, I'm a FTM and I live in Brooklyn, NY.  My husband and I DO NOT drive (I know, I know, we are weird).  We just never needed to learn how to drive and now the expense of a car in the city is just not in our cards.  We WILL likely be learning how to drive soon since baby is coming but I digress.

Since we are mostly pedestrian, I'm wondering what other city mamas (any big city!) have or are planning on getting?  I was looking at the Chicco or Britax travel systems because we will need a car seat despite not knowing how to drive but I'm also looking for light weight, compact, and good on rough-ish terrain like city sidewalks lol.  Any suggestions or advice?

  • Check out the Uppa Cruz or Vista (if you are thinking of having another--coverts to two seater)--- it's what all the mommy's at the park in Washington Square have plus the company backs up it's product and will help with repairs should something come up.  It's a higher price point than what you are looking at but has a travel system and you can get adapters to a lower price point car seat then the Uppa Mesa.  I also like the Mamas and Papas stoller but you don't see as many of those on the street as the Uppa.  If cost weren't a consideration I would want the Cybex Priam (not available yet but I think by Fall it will be out) but even with no car I can't justify the expense.

The handling on the more expensive strollers is much better -- go try them out and compare -- think about one handed steering and breaks that are easy to deal with also being able to tip back and get up on curbs.  Try folding if you are thinking about being able to take cabs with the system.

Note the big strollers are terrible for the subway --- super heavy of stairs and big (this is an issue with storing at home as well but all the baby stuff seems to take over anyway -- some of them fold flatter then others).  Almost every mom I know at about 6-8 months gets a light weight stroller as well.  Think about registering for a Vovlo (Maclearn) or G-lite (Uppa) or something like that as well as the travel system -- living without the car makes the multiple stroller options more necessary.

  • i live in the city too and don't know how to drive!!
i've checked out Bugaboo Cameleon, Uppababy Visa & Cruz and Mamas and Papas Urbo2....

my favorite among the 3 is the least popular Mamas and papas..
my reason for choosing this is because, i know i will have to lug it around with the baby and i don't think i can handle the heaviness of a bugaboo and uppababy..
while the bugaboo has the smoothest feel on the road (i did a roadtest for all 3).. i just feel like the Urbo2 is more city friendly! it's lighter and more compact.. especially if you're thinking of using it in the subway!

my husband doesn't agree me with me though, well he drives and has a car, maybe  that's why!... so it's still not a done deal for us.. but i am pushing for the Urbo2!

Thanks for staring this! I'm a FTM in Brooklyn too. I've been checking out the strollers around my neighborhood and they are all monstrous!! I can't imaging carrying them down the subway stairs - and with a baby inside!
  • Hey ny mama i suggest you visit the nyc baby expo they let you try out all strollers!i my self live in woodside queens ...i purchased the chicco urbanits ease of opening and closing is amazing the size of the wheels. Are good for those pleasant snow storms we tend to het and the stroler converts to a basinet so you dont need to buy a separate. Part for it!the infant carseat also clucks into the stroller making it super wasy to remove and add when needed! I was able to get the car seat and the stroller from the chicco site and even got a free diaper bag free shipping and 25$off!!!!

  • I am a nanny living in a big city (in Europe) and therefore have pushed a lot of different strollers around!! The most popular here and Bugaboo and Stokke, but there are also lots of people who use umbrella strollers usually McClaren which I HATE for city use!!! My FAVOURITE all time stroller is the Joolz Geo (Duo)... It's a Dutch brand, amazing!!! Not sure if it's in your price range but it's similarly priced to Bugaboos and Stokkes, but it's literally THE BEST and you can fit two kids in the Duo without having a massively wide monster which in the city is so important. It's definitely an investment but SO worth it.... Love love love the Joolz!!! It rolls like butter and fits through small store aisles, easily into public transport and it folds up teeny tiny! Look up their demos on YouTube you will be amazed!
  • You might want to consider the city mini with a car seat adaptor. It's super light weight, good on uneven sidewalks and has a one hand fold. We live in Boston and they're everywhere.
The uppa baby is also very popular, but pricier and more complicated to fold/store.
  • Echoing @eat111315: citi mini is excellent. The one hand fold alone is worth the price. It's expensive but worth it and very durable for sidewalks and other uneven terrain. We have a bugaboo and an uppababy g-luxe too (overkill I know) and the citi is by far my favorite. They also have a lot of resale value. If eventually you sell it on a listserv, you'll make out pretty well.
  • Dont get the britax does not maneuver well as baby gets bigger. I have it and hate it! I live in philly and for none subway bus ventures I use the city select. Its heavy but we have the worst sidewalks and it has good tires and Im expecting second baby Oct 11 so i can put bith kids in it. I wouldn't worry too much about carseat attachment they get heavy quick and make your light travel stroller heavy. For newborn since you dont drive I would recommend a carrier and a umbrella as a light weight subway friendly, I see a lot of Mcklaren and Uppa no idea which one is better since i dont have them and dont use the subway. Get a nicer bigger 4 tire stroller for long walks when not needing the subway. Since you dont have a car invest in two strollers its worth it. I do use the britax for the zoo and trips where I need to throw a stroller in the car. Go try them out I didn't and regret it. Good luck!
  • I don't live in a city but have been to NYC, Miami, San Fran, Atlanta and several other cities with my Uppa Vista and love it. I have the Chicco infant car seat adapter for it too. This will be baby number 3 with that Vista and still going strong. The city mini (or city select if you plan on more children) is also great but I did always seem to have trouble folding mine down. It was a city mini double though, not the single.
  • City moms – anyone have any experience with the Contours Bliss stroller? I'd love the Uppababy Vista, but it is just so much money...the Contours stroller is similar at half the price.
  • wow, thanks for all the great suggestions! I have a lot of research to do!

  • @VioletandRose I hear they don't hold up with the uneven streets.  I think they look ok but that if you need a work horse of a stroller to take out on the streets everyday with heavy bags and a growing kid it's worth spending the extra or looking for second hand.  You can get them cleaned and tuned up for not much and a well made stroller will almost be good as new.

I am so glad to meet some kindred spirits! I grew up in NYC, so I never got a license. Fast forward to 2015 and we live in CT. I am still license free...working on it! But I knew that I had to pick a stroller that would serve me as walking is my main mode of transportation. I bought a Bugaboo C3. Great maneuverability. But I have to warn you, it's def on the heavy side. I think I would go Stokke if I was still in the city because it's a little more lightweight and not as bulky, For my car/walking needs, the Bugaboo does the trick. Good luck on your search!

I'm in the city and I was considering the bugaboo bee3. I'm petite and the women at the store said they suggest it for more petite moms and the ride is still great because it's a bugaboo. I haven't test drove it yet. My sister had the bugaboo chameleon and she hated it because it was heavy and the seat always has to be removed to close it. My friend had the vista and called it the tank and said she could never get into elevators or in and out of stores. So that's why I was thinking the bugaboo bee!

Fellow Brooklynite here! Expecting #3. This might sound nuts, but consider the Phil & Teds tandem double (or similar double) even if you're not planning on another baby. The second seat is far roomier than any single stroller's storage space, which can really come in handy for pedestrian living. I've fit 3 or 4 full bags of groceries, my yoga mat, and a blanket for a picnic for the park in there, in addition to my little one. We got a double when we had #2 and immediately wished we'd had it all along. We used the second seat for stuff far more often than as a seat for our older child. Something to consider...
