Question for 2nd time Moms

We have most of our "big ticket items" left over from our first baby, but there are still things that I know we need to purchase. I am just curious - what did you skip last time that you wish you would have bought - or what was your "can't live without..." item for baby number one?

a good swing and boppy (if your nursing)! I felt the bumbo, changing table, bouncy chair, bottle warmer, etc was a waste of time and space.

  • This is my second and some things I wish we'd had that we'll be getting is a bigger drying rack.  We have a Boon grass and I'm planning on getting the lawn.  I use it for wine glasses and all kinds of stuff, so the extra space will be nice.  I'll also be getting the video monitor that pans.  I love ours and I don't think the panning was an option when DS was born, but now that he'll be heading into a toddler bed soon, I need to be able to see what mischief he might be up to :) Also, we should have purchased more changing pad covers and boppy covers, which we'll have several of this time.

Other must-haves that we'll use again: bouncer (to move from room to room), cradle cap brush, boppy, nipple balm, pumping bra (SO necessary if you'll be pumping), big hooded towels that you can use for longer than 3-6 months, humidifier (we love our Crane so much we got one for our room too), diaper genie and gas drops.

We skipped out on a bassinet last time, but will be getting one for this baby.  We just used the bassinet in the pack n play for DD, but she didn't seem comfortable by the time she was about 10 pounds (it just seemed quite hard).  Once we moved her into her crib at 2 months, she was a lot less restless and actually started sleeping through the night the first night we switched her.

My can't live without item for DD was a good quality stroller.  We are huge fans of Peg Perego and the extra cost was worth it to us to get an exceptional stroller that handled amazingly well, and had all the "bells and whistles".  DD was born in June, so we did a lot of walks.

  • The only additional thing we got for out second was a stationary jumper/activity thing (which obviously wasn't until later)
We used our buzzy chair and bassinet more than with the first simply because he could snooze or play in it where ever the rest of the family was in the house. We also started using pacifier strings/clips and glow in the dark pacifiers earlier because we knew about them (he didn't use a pacifier right away).
  • Actually we got a walker over an exersaucer but it doesn't work well in our apartment since most of it is carpeted. We borrowed a friends exersaucer and loved it! So I am considering ditching the walker for a nice collapsible exersaucer. :) I also was eyeballing this car mirror that SIL has. It is really nice and pretty sure I didn't see anything like it that first time round so I'm thinking I need one of those. :) that's really all I can think of though.

  • I'll be getting extra changing pad covers and boppy covers for this baby in case of reflux, and I'm also going to give putting a hazelwood necklace (day) or anklet (night) on baby in he/she has reflux like my son did.

I didn't get a glider till DS was about 9 months old so I'm glad I'll have that from day 1 this time around.

And I plan to buy a double stroller. I can't imagine spending nice days cooped up in a small apartment just because the park is a mile walk. Once baby hits 12-15 lbs, I don't think I'll want to use the Ergo while pushing my 33-lb tot in the stroller, so we'll need that double.

  • I want a video monitor.  We didn't get one the first time, but will get one this time with two cameras.

  • These are all great!
  • I am getting wrap baby carriers, with DS never wanting to be in the stroller I just think it will be easier for when we go shopping and not having to lug the car seat in.
Our diaper pail broke and we never replaced it and I don't think we will get another one! We use the little diaper trash bags from the dollar store and just throw the out into the garbage cans. We didn't use the pack n play much the first time around, we will see wih this one!
Oh and I wish we would have just gotten a jogging stroller to begin with! I do not plan on getting a double bc DS is wanting to walk everywhere! He managed the entire zoo one day for like three hours that was the test of taking it anymore!
We also couldn't go without pacifier clips those things saved our lives! They will be brought back out!
  • We are getting a new video monitor, and I bought a changing station for this one. Bending over on the floor and couch was hard on my back. Sleepers with the open feet are coming back out bc they were way better than the ones you have to take their feet out of.

I'm going to need another Sophie the Giraffe or something similar. My DD loved on hers so much that it got a hole worn into it after a year of good use. Also, if LO is anything like DD, it might be nice to splurge a little on those mom necklaces that are safe for baby to teeth on. They look so cute and practical. Anyone have any experience with them? I used my carriers a lot the first time around and plan on doing the same with LO but once spring/summer hits next year, I'm wondering if we'll at least need a sit n' stand type stroller or something. Ugh, more nursing bras, too.

Oh wow, I forgot the big item I told DH I really would like to have. A new glider/recliner. No more hand-me-downs that squeak no matter what we do to them! I spent so much time rocking and nursing DD, so it would be nice to have something quiet! Plus, as a personal preference, I would love a nursing stool. In the beginning, I was always putting my feet on tip-toes to get my legs at the right angle for DD when she was tiny.

I purchased a teething necklace from thechickbeads. I thought they were very reasonably priced, about $12-15. I can't wait to use it. It's cute and now I won't have to worry about this LO destroying my necklaces like DD did.

  • I have to add a new video monitor to my list. The one that we currently have only shows DS's bed, so I couldn't see that this morning, he'd gotten out of bed and colored all over his door!

  • I have one chewbead necklace that my DD seemed to like when she was little. I think it's from an Etsy shop.

Ditto the pp about a larger drying rack. I wanted small and compact last time but that was a pain with bottles for daycare and my pump parts every day.

Once baby arrives and my milk comes in and regulates I'm going to invest in some nice nursing bras. I used soft ones for my daughter but I nursed for almost two years. Towards the end I hate my nursing bras so I just wore my regular bras and folded them down, which ruined them

  • Best teething toys are the baby toothbrush from toys r us and the life factory rings and frozen teethers that are easy to hold on to and suck on. My first child loved the toothbrush baby teether. I am getting another this time around.
  • I love Sophie the giraffe too. I am also getting a wipe warmer. My kids all hate cold wipes and ive spent years of my life warming them each time. I used to think it was frivolous but I'm getting on.

Oh and the Gerber cloth diapers they sell at target are the best burp towels ever. I'm stocking up again.
