Boob Manners

My DD is 6 weeks old, and breastfeeding is finally getting less painful. However, it is still very frustrating at times. We finally figured out a good latch, but getting her on is not always easy. She flails her arms like crazy, and makes it near impossible to get my boob near her mouth. If I swaddle her to keep her arms down, she falls asleep eating even faster than normal. Also, she won't open her mouth wide enough, so I pretty much have to wait until she is crying and just shove my nipple in her mouth at the right moment. Once she's latched she will eat pretty well. She chugs when I letdown, but in between she seems to get frustrated. Sometimes she will thrash her head back and forth (ouch!) or bite me with her gums (even more ouch!).

Has anyone dealt with this? I want to teach her not to do these things, but how do you teach a baby? Should I unlatch her when she bites or thrashes? Any advice is appreciated!

  • My DS does the "bite" too. I'd describe it more as a grinding my nipple between his gums. I think he is trying to slow the flow of milk and usually ends up popping off on his own. I usually just grin & bear it.

As far as getting LO latched with crazy arms & hands, I read somewhere to keep their mouth on your breast while getting situated. I started doing this, and it helped greatly. Also I take his bottom hand (cradle hold) and have him grip my finger behind his ear.

  • My little girl like to thrash her head around when latched on (ouch is right!) usually I just pull her off and try to burp her then start over again.
  • When my son does the "bite" and pull I break the latch and start over. I also tell him "that hurts mommy" in a different voice than normal. I know he can't understand me, but I feel that he knows that something is wrong and that is why I broke the latch. He does not like the brief time off the breast; I think he understands not to do it anymore, as it has been happening less.

There's a lot of advice about this on la Leche leagues website, but basically that bite is trying to stem the flow. You can pump a tiny bit before latching on or you can lean back so the milk is flowing uphill. That makes you flow slow down. It's working for us so far!
