Whooping cough

I was just wondering how many of you ladies recieved the whooping cough vaccine? My doctor is really trying to push it on me which I understand the reasoning for it because it's fatal to babies however I'm having a hard time making a decision if I would like it done while I'm carrying my DD. Also have any of your DHs recieved this vaccine as well? Any comments on the vaccine? My apologies if it has been discussed.

I got it, but only because the week before my shower with DH's side of the family, 3 students in my MIL's first grade class were diagnosed with whooping cough and it seemed stupid for me not to get it knowing I'd be in contact with someone who'd recently been exposed. If it hadn't been for that, I don't think I would've gone out of my way to get it. DH has not had his yet, but will before LO arrives.

Yes, this has been discussed - search "pertussis" maybe. I got mine. The point is to get it when baby's still inside so she gets some immunity, too. I got it because there have been consistent outbreaks in my area, and although most babies don't die from it, about half end up in the hospital. A few infants did die around here maybe two years ago. Plus, there's no "season" for it, so being a summer baby doesn't help like for the flu.

I absolutely got this, and DH will be getting it before/immediately after the birth. There was some research just released that the best way to pass on antibodies to whooping cough is to get the vaccine in pregnancy.

Get the vaccine and have all family members who will be around baby a lot get it too. I had a booster with my first, as did DH. Our daycare requires all staff to be current on vaccines, too. It's safe and you will never forgive yourself if the worst could have been prevented. Whooping cough is on the rise across the country.

Besides, do you really think the Internet knows better than your doc? Your doctor has multiple degrees and a license to practice medicine.

I'm weary of all meds, especially during pregnancy. I opted to do it after some research. It really is the best way to provide your baby with some immunity before they are old enough to get their vaccines. I am also having all family who are going to have close contact.

I didn't get it with DS1 because I had received it two years prior, but DH and all grandparents/aunts and uncles got it. I got it this time as my OB recommended it since it have been about 5-6 years and some can get passed on to the baby. Since everyone else has had it within the last 3 years I don't see the need for them to get it again since it usually lasts 5-10 (depending on dosage).

You may also want to search TDAP since it is usually a combined vaccine.

I got it and hubby will too. My daughter is up-to-date. Better safe than sorry.

I gladly got it and made the hubs get his as well. Mine was up to date, I only got it four years ago, however, that does not help the baby. The whole reason you get it while pregnant, regardless of when your last booster was, is to get those antibodies to the baby.

Yep, both DH and I both received it. With my last pregnancy the recommendation was it get it right after delivery. But that has now changed to the third trimester. Since its been 4.5 years since my parents received their tDap, they will be getting it again just to be on the safe side.

I had gotten a booster before traveling overseas in the past two years, but got it again during pregnancy to pass along the immunity more effectively. My husband and all immediate family also got a tDap within the past two years. Better to be safe!

Even though I had my booster 2 years ago my doc had me get the TDAP last week to pass along immunity until she gets her own shot at 2 months. DH is getting his soon. We aren't making our relatives get the shot unless they choose to, because they won't be primary caregivers.

I didn't get it (I will after delivery) because I have a history of bad reactions to this vaccine. I don't mind getting a fever/ rash myself but decided not to risk harming the baby. I was worried with all the outbreaks going on, but after talking with my doctor he re assured me that baby would most likely be okay. It's a fairly new procedure for pregnant women to receive the vaccine every pregnancy.

I got it and DH has an appt tomorrow morning to get his. My dad got it and my mom is going to get it. My IL's tried to say they weren't going to get it so I said they wouldn't get to see the baby. Sounds harsh but I mean seriously it's a shot get over it. DH and I offered to pay for any family member to get it if they weren't covered through insurance so there's no reason not to! Ok mini rant over

Got mine a couple weeks into 1st trimester and DH got his last week. All grandparents will be getting it, too. My mom is current as she used to work at an obgyn but I want anyone who is around baby consistently vaccinated. My arm was sore for a couple days but that was the only symptom I experienced. I did find lots of info on the cdc website about it

I toy with mandating any relatives to get it. They are 2 hours away and won't be watching LO much. We might just ask the grandmothers on both sides - the likely babysitters, if any.

I got it, even though i had gotten a booster less than a year before this one...you get it while pregnant so the benefits can flow to the baby, whether you are current on your booster or not.

DH had his booster less than a year ago too (when i had mine - we got them before traveling for our honeymoon), so he doesn't need another one. His parents had theirs when our nephew was born two years ago, so they're also current. My parents have been asked to get theirs before coming to see the baby. You can't be too careful really. Especially when it's such an easy thing to prevent.

Are you having extended family get it? My parents, MIL, and SIL will get it because they will be around the baby for extended periods of time.

My grandfather is planning to come down at some point but is in his 80s (my understanding is with his age he can't get the shot). Should I tell him to wait to come down until after baby boy gets the shot? I'm not trying to be mean but baby boy's health comes first and I don't want to mess with whooping cough!

Honestly I never really even thought to have other family members get the shot.. That's something that I'll also have to think about
