Congestion?! Please help!

This morning I was listening to my baby sleep, and it sounded like he had a little congestion. Well, maybe not that exactly, but like he might have had a little snot somewhere in his nose/throat? What can I do for this?? I don't want him to not be able to breathe. :-S

  • Maybe try running a humidifier in his room at night. You could also take a hot shower break and keep him in the bathroom with you in a bouncy chair or something. Hopefully either of those will lossen up whatever is in there. :)

Try saline spray and the nose suction they gave you at the hospital
  • Have your hot water run in the bathtub and let it get warm and steamy... You and baby sit in the bathroom and let the steam clear his nose... This did wonders for my little. I also added baby gentle essential oil to the water for a soothing scent... Hope he feels better!

All of the above, and if possible, have him sleep propped up to help drain the mucus. The nosefrida works really well and putting Vicks on the bottom of the feet, then covering with socks.
  • Thanks, everyone! I'll try these and hopefully clear it up!
  • My LO got a cold two days ago and has been dealing with congestion and coughing. I'm a family nurse practitioner, so I feel confident enough to treat her without going to her doctor. That being said, my advice here is not to be used in place of your own doctor's advice. Things you should keep in mind: congestion is fairly normal in infants, so don't go crazy trying to treat it with any questionable things (medications, homeopathic remedies, etc.)- a little Vicks or aromatherapy is fine, but don't go overboard with anything; only use the nasal aspirator if you can see what you're aspirating, don't blindly try to remove mucus you cannot see; use a humidifier, or hot water in the bathroom if you don't have a humidifier; sit him up while sleeping (in something that is approved for sleeping, as most swings or bouncers have precautions that baby should not be left unattended) or have him sleep on an incline by raising the entire crib mattress if he is coughing at night or trying to clear the congestion. If he continues to have problems, go to the pediatrician. Also, watch for fever over 100.4 and any problems with eating or wetting. Hope you notice an improvement and that it is nothing more than the normal infant congestion.

It turned out to be nothing. I didn't see anything in his nostrils, so I didn't use the nasal aspirator. I think I was just overreacting. He seems to have allergies (I also have allergies) and sneezes a few times a day. Maybe he just had a little bit of something in there..? Anyway, it seems to be gone now. He's breathing just fine and has no cough associated with his sneezing (other than occasionally coughing on a bit of spit) and has a normal temperature. Thanks for the advice!
