Low milk supply issues

I know others have posted about this, but I'm having a bad day and just need some support. My baby is 10 days old and I've had milk supply issues from the beginning. I'm in the nurse-supplement-pump cycle which is draining. I started fenugreek yesterday and have reglan but am afraid to start taking it due to the side effects. I was disappointed I had to supplement but it was medically necessary and I'm glad baby is getting the nutrition needed. I'm only at 15 mls when I pump and I am doing everything right after my 3rd lactation consultant visit. Can anyone relate or share stories to help? I'm afraid I'm not going to be able to breastfeed.

Re: Low milk supply issues

  • Just let the baby nurse as much and as often as possible. Pumping will never yield as much as a baby can get. And when the baby drains you it will help tell you body, make more for next time!

My first baby didn't latch at all so I had a low milk supply. Reglan helped me without the side effects. But if your baby can latch, that will help the most.
And try to remember that formula is not poison. It is still food that will feed your baby. Medically it may be what is necessary and you are not hurting your baby.
Breastfeeding is extremely difficult! It doesn't seem like it should be but it is.

  • I cannot get a latch due to collapsed nipples, I also have low milk supply, and I am unable to get anything from a pump. Whatever I can get (10 ml total from both boobs together) is from hand expressing for 1-2 hours.

I will say, you are stronger than I am. You are putting in soooo much effort and you should be proud of yourself for doing so much for so long! Keep it up since you want to breastfeed. Every bit is helping!

Pp is right, breastfeeding is hard, and something I had wanted myself but cannot do. So I want to commend you for doing so well so far! I know some people in my community make lactation cookies. Something to look for in your area?

    Keep it up :D
  • I don't know if it is against the rules but I would love to connect via email, as I am going through the exact same thing. My LO is 16 days old. I did the Reglan and literally everything else you can think of. LMK if you want to connect and act as a support system for each other.

@nursej519 did reglan work for you? Did you have any side effects?

Thanks ladies for your support and encouragement. I needed it today.
  • It worked while I was taking it but my milk went back to where it was after I stopped :-( I had no side effects.

  • I took reglin with my 1st. It made me very sad. I was doubting motherhood and crying a ton. Luckily, I knew it was from the meds and short term. Fenugreek made me smell awful and dd wouldn't drink my milk and was fussy when I held her. I only did that for 1 day. Everyone is different of course.

I tried to bf for a few weeks but she didn't latch well. Since she was under 5 lbs when she came home so I had to ensure she got enough. I pumped after every feeding for 45 mins, every 2 hours. It was awful but I don't regret it. I always had supply issues. I had to start supplementing at 2 months, which was a big relief. I was finally able to leave the house or get more than 1 hour sleep. I stopped pumping at 4 months, when I was only able to pump enough for 1 bottle a day. I was very disappointed but I did my best and that's all I can do. I'm hoping bf goes better for this guy. I can't keep up that pumping schedule with a toddler.

Don't be too hard on yourself and supplement when you must.

Have you tried milk maker cookies with Brewers yeast, ground flax seeds and oats? Has always really helped my supply when getting low. Hope this helps. Hang in there!
  • Drink a Gatorade every day and or a coconut water. They boost supply. Try lactation cookies or a lactation smoothie and make sure your drinking tons and tons of water.
  • @CateOfChicago I am glad to see your experience with your first didn't ruin it enough for you to not trt again. I get worried about that. My LO was born premature so I think that is where a lot of your BF issues originated. We were off to a bad start and just can't seem to get on track. I don't want to quit but it is kind of ruining her newborn stage for me, and I want to enjoy it!! I am afraid if I quit, I won't ever try again.

I just bought everything to make lactation cookies today. Sadly, my LO was having a super gassy, fussy day and wouldn't let me put her down long enough to make them. I will try this morning!
