How important are initials?

We are considering a FN that starts with E for our daughter, and our LN starts with W. At first, I said to my DH, "we can't give her the initials 'EW'" But, the closer we get to arrival, the more I like the name, and it's spelling, and wonder if the initials will really be an issue in the long run. Will kids even notice something like that? I'm a teacher and can't think of very often when initials are thought about, at least not at a young age. Eventually her last initial will change with marriage (most likely). But what are everyone's thoughts on importance? Should I be concerned?

I don't think you have anything to worry about. If you're that concerned then be sure to give her a middle name to break it up.

Not a big deal. I'd be more concerned if her initials were ASS or FUK or something. E_W isn't a deal breaker to me.

I just realized my initials are EW as well (go by Elizabeth and married name is W). If you add in my first name, it's JEW. I think the fact that it never occurred to me means it is not that big of a deal.

Also consider how a monogram would look. Perfectly innocent initials may spell PIS or FUK on a monogram

As someone else said, not at all important until you've accidentally made the sibset SUK and FUK. Then it kind of matters.

But E_W isn't at all a big deal. I'd be surprised if she were every teased for it. Mind sharing the FN? Curious what other spellings there would be.

I only consider this a big deal if it spells something vulgar. E.?.W. Is not a big deal to me.

You said you like the spelling, what is the name and is there another way to spell it that may remedy this altogether?

Kids will come up with ways to tease even if they aren't tease-worthly! My initials were HP, and once Harry Potter came out, everyone thought it was hilarious. For half a second. I would not worry about EW! I have a good friend with those initials and have never noticed until right now!

I wouldn't worry about EW. If her initials or monogram spelled ASS, FUK, FAG, etc then it's different.

I don't think you can go wrong with Elena W.

FWIW, I've always loved Helena more than Elena, and I think Elle or Ellie are acceptable as nicknames for that as well. So if you really can't get over EW, you might want to consider Helena.

I wouldn't worry about EW. If it spelled something sexual or a curse word that would be a different story.

I'd avoid a middle name that started with a w to prevent EWW but other than that, like pps say, you're fine

Elena is the name, could be spelled Alaina or something similar.

FN we are considering is Elena, it could be spelled with an A as Alaina, but I like Elena and calling her Ellie or Elle for short.
