membrane sweep

I am 39 weeks and 4 days, yesterday at 5pm I had my membrane stripped by my doctor. She said I am around 2.5cm and not very effaced. I am scheduled to be induced Monday at 4am but I was wondering what the odds were of going naturally with the help of the membrane strip? I had awful cramps right after and through the night but today by much cramping, a little here and there. No spotting either! I also lost my mucus plug Friday! I'm so anxious!!

My doctor said it just raises your chnaces by 20 percent. So, if your body is not ready it won't happen. I had it done at 40 plus 1 and I cramped and had some contractions then it all went away as well. I think the sweep brings out the plug but if labor does not start soon then a new plug grows to protect.

  • I think that it is really hit or miss & depends on if your body is ready or not.  8-| I wish it was more cut & dry!! I had mine stripped today. Doctor just said she was hoping to push things along so I wouldn't have to be induced next week, so we will see! So far all I am noticing is bad cramps. I'm praying that LO will make his appearance this weekend!

p.s. Dang! A 4am induction is early! I must admit that I'm a little jealous - I imagine there is a peace about having an induction date set up already! Good luck to you & LO.

  • I got mine swept on a Thursday & went into labor the following Saturday but everyone is different.
  • I had mine stripped at 3:45, then got sent to the hospital with high blood pressure to get induced. By the time I got to the hospital around 7 labor had already started. I guess my body was just ready to go and needed a push.
  • At my last appt my doctor said the baby's head was incredibly low and in position and that my uterus was anterior at this point so she was going to do a membrane sweep at my next weekly appt (I will be 39 weeks 3 days at that point). Just wondering how effective people found membrane sweeps and what the discomfort level was, I know it varies.

I had a sweep done yesterday - 38w5d and it was uncomfortable but was so quick! I took a deep breath in and out and it was done.

Afterwards there was minor spotting (still can last up to 3 days), period like cramps and more pelvic pressure.

Since it just happened, I don't know how successful it'll be but at the time I was 3cm and thin.

I had it done a couple of days ago and I didn't even know she was doing it. It was not bad at all. That's different for everyone though. All it did for me was cause cramping and a few contractions. I'm 39+3 today.
  • I had my second one today, first one was 39+5 and today was 41 +1, doesn't feel to have helped, has some pains after but feel fine now,
  • Had membrane sweep at 41 wks + 3days and 2days later I still havent had any sign of labor. Not even cramping which happened last time they checked my cervix. Even this late in the game, my body must not be ready.. so frustrating cuz i reaaaally dont wanna be induced :( gonna try castor oil tomorrow i thk. Induction scheduled for Friday 8pm so this my last chance
  • I had it done on a Friday when I wasn't dialated at all and went into labor on my own and had her the following Monday. It's possible :)
  • I had my second one done yesterday at 40 weeks 4 days and today I lost my mucus plug and finally had some contractions, but they've pretty much stopped. The first time nothing happened, so it's still progress. Hoping the contractions pick back up tomorrow otherwise we're setting up an induction for early next week.
  • My midwife says bouncing on a birthing ball will help
  • I had one yesterday at 37+6. I was a good 1.5 cms dialated and she said baby's head was very very low. Since then I've had a bit of bleeding/ loss of plug and a ton of pelvic pressure. Relatively uneventful otherwise. I've been bouncing on the birthing ball a lot. Might go walk around the mall today, try to encourage a little progress anyway as she will sweep again next Wednesday.

I had a sweep at 39+1 and 1/2 cm and lost my mucus plug over the next 2 days, went back to Dr at 39+6 was 1 cm and had another sweep with no effect. Going back today at 40+1 and hoping that I have dialated more. They say after 2 cm a sweep is more effective so I'm hoping for some progress!!
  • I had a membrane sweep done on Monday at my 38w6d appointment. I was 2cm dilated and 75% thinned out and she told me my baby was very very low and my water sake was buldging?? She was very positive I'd go into labor that night or within 3 days. I had bad cramping that night that went away when I went to sleep and then had cramping the next day and started losing my mucus plug and had the bloody show. I've been having BH contractions that have been pretty hard for 2 months but not close enough for it to be labor. It is now Thursday I was in labor and delivery this morningwith very bad low cramps and back pain and contractions but they monitored baby's heartbeat only and checked my cervix which I'm only at a 3cm and sent me home. Im so miserable and I feel like im going to have a 10lb baby. Im so over being pregnant and working on my feet 9hrs until midnight and being in pain petty much the past month...... I have hope that my son will come soon but I want to cry until he decides to.
  • I had mine swept and my water broke a week late. Everyone is different.
