Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

Hey all you mommas and momma-to-be!
My husband and I had been off all birth control and were just charting for over a year. We weren't trying to get pregnant, but in February I could tell something about my body was just "off". My periods were irregular, my breasts basically stayed sore, and I was starting to get acne (didn't even have acne as a teen!). I went to my OBGYN to get checked out. I fully expected her to just tell me I had a progesterone difficiency and that it was no big deal, it could be fixed easily. I never expected my diagnosis of PCOS. I researched like crazy and quickly realized Google is NOT my friend. My doc explained that I would probably have fertility issues down the road, and in order to get pregnant and maintain a pregnancy, I would need to see a fertility specialist. Although we weren't even trying at the time, my world crumbled. I wanted to be a mom more than anything! My husband and I prayed, cried, prayed WAY more, and finally just accepted it as our road to walk. We found strength in each other, and we knew we would figure it out together. I was put on a medicine to try and jump start my system and get me ovulating again since I wasn't at all. In April we decided to just let go and let God. We had to give it up because the pressures of knowing this could take a long time coupled with people constantly asking us when we were going to start a family was too much to take. Much to our shock and joy we found out we were pregnant May 1. I just stood in the bathroom and stared at the test for what seemed like forever. I have cried and laughed! However, the fear is real! I have this little tiny human growing inside me and I want to jump and shout with a joy I've never before felt, but I'm also very aware the risks are high for a miscarriage with PCOS. I was just wondering if anyone else was in the same situation. If so, how are you coping with the fear and anxiety? I thought this might be a great place to offer encouragement and support. I know I could use a double dose of both!

I have PCOS. I could not conceive naturally because I just was not ovulating. I'm pregnancy now with the help of RE. I feel so blessed but also so scared that when I go for my first scan there will not be a baby there. PCOS is stressful. I'm so happy for you & so thrilled you got pregnant naturally! Congrats! Hi 9 months :)

I have pcos, I am now 5 weeks and 1 day prego with my third child. I have been pregnant 5 times this far. All done naturally. My daughter is 10 and my son is 5, it was always hard to conceive but most of the time if I made it past week 6 it was a good chance all was good. but all I can say is don't stress "easier said than done" rest and don't over do it, eat healthy and you should be ok, have faith & best wishes hun.
  • I have suspected PCOS according to my OB. My husband and I were not TTC but I wanted to go off the pill for other reasons, and after 1x it happened (good news for folks with PCOS? I'm 30 so not super super young either). I've posted about not having any symptoms still at almost 7 weeks (and how I'm freaked out about it) but I came across one random article on the Internet about how sometimes people with PCOS don't feel symptoms as much. Has anyone else ever heard this? I have no idea if it is true, but plan to ask my doc when I finally get to see him next week at 8 wks.

I'm 31 and haven't pcos, haven't heard the article but I am definitely having full blown normal symptoms aside from the vomiting. Can you post the article for me to read? Thanks.
  • Here it is - https://m.newkidscenter.com/Pregnant-But-No-Symptoms.html

Just scroll down to the heading about PCOS. I don't know if this is a verifiable site or not and I couldn't find anything else to support the article. Interested to hear what the doc says.
  • Wow! I to will be asking my doctor when I go in next week, thanks!
  • I have PCOS and with my DD I had MS until 13.5 weeks, sore boobs, exhaustion, breakouts, etc. I also ended up with sciatica pain during the end, and wicked Charlie horses at night. Anecdotal, but you can definitely still get symptoms with PCOS. I think the hormones hit me harder since my hormones were a little off to begin with, if that makes sense?

Congratulations kaybeeoh! I have pcos too and had my pregnancy confirmed earlier this week. As far as I understand PCOS, it only affects the chances of getting pregnant. More like a cyst bursts open when your egg is supposed to release. But once conceived I don't suppose that there are any other problems from the mother's hormones. That is what my gyn told me a year ago. I am yet to have a proper session with my ob/gyn as she was super concerned about it being a viable pregnancy on my first visit. An ultrasound was schedules ASAP, and I an now 6w3d pregnant!! Going again on 26th May. I suggest that you relax and look forward to a smooth pregnancy, as beating PCOS itself is one huge challenge completed! once again, congratulations!! :)
  • In a very similar situation. Was diagnosed with PCOS in February and told that our only chances for conceiving a child together was IVF as DH's count was also low.

We prayed tons and just handed it to God, figuring we would reassess in a year or so if something hadn't happened by then.

And somehow, miracle of miracles, I got a + test on 4/28. It still blows my mind. We have now see the baby twice and it's becoming more real though I am still very afraid. I have had 7 m/c in the past, so it never really leaves your mind until you're outside of the first trimester.

Hugs, your time to celebrate is surely coming.
  • Congrats! I just had my first baby in March and I'm not currently pregnant, but I try to weigh in on PCOS stuff. I hope that's okay! I was diagnosed with PCOS at 17 and was told the same things you were by my doc. Fast forward 11 years and my husband and I were ready to begin on the long road to get pregnant. With only one round of meds I got pregnant and gave birth to a healthy baby girl 8 weeks ago. I asked my doctor about the miscarriage risk and worried about it well into my second trimester. I was told that while miscarriages CAN be more common with PCOS, many women with PCOS never experience this. On the other hand, many women without PCOS have miscarriages. Basically you don't know what's going to happen. I encourage you to go to all of your doctor's visits, be healthy, and enjoy every moment. One tip is that some women with PCOS have low progesterone which can cause miscarriage. You may want to ask your doctor to test you because they can easily remedy that with meds if need be. Good luck!

Thanks for this! Also, I was wondering about having low progesterone, but my doc doesn't want to see me until June 1 when I'll be 8wks 5d.im terrified that waiting this long will cause problems with my pregnancy if my progesterone is indeed low. It's just frustrating that I'm having to wait to long. I know 8-10 weeks is normal, but with the PCOS, I would love to at least have my levels checked to make sure I'm progressing normally. I'm only 25. Healthy as a horse aside from the PCOS, and this is my first pregnancy. No previous miscarriages, so I'm hoping she just doesn't feel like I'm going to have a problem.
  • I most likely have undiagnosed PCOS, even though I haven't had fertility problems. I just visited my endo because before this pregnancy I have been having problems with hair growing on my face and chin, and losing hair on my head! They tested my thyroid and nothing is wrong with it (so far, in Nov, they just took blood AGAIN). But she said most likely I have PCOS/Extra androgen which is something that really shocked me, since I really related PCOS and fertility issues. My periods had started to be really erratic when I got pregnant, so I suspect it was progressing further. Also, it makes a lot of sense to me since I got pre-e with my 2nd and not my first. I started to have these symptoms right after I had my first child, and people with PCOS are more likely to get pre-e.

I feel like I've been searching for answers forever, I'm hoping that once I have this baby we can go ahead and treat it and all these terrible symptoms will cease! It's too bad nothing can be done whilst pregnant. :(
