January 2016 Moms

Teachers?

I've been lurking and have noticed that it seems like several of us are teachers! I'm a kindergarten teacher, love love love it.

What grades do you teach?
How do you feel about your January due date and where it falls within the school year?

Teachers of Jan 2016 unite!

Re: Teachers?

  • I teach middle and high school science but currently work from home on a website that I own.
  • Loading the player...
  • I am a former pre-k teacher, aka glorified babysitter. I loved it! I stopped working when I got pregnant with DS1, but will go back "someday".

  • I teach elementary school! I had extended my leave after DS to return in the new school year but now I am going to have to return in June in order to get mat leave again. I wasn't ready to go back yet!
  • I am also a kindergarten teacher! And it seems we have the same name too! I'm Jamie too haha.

I am a little unsure of how it will work out with going back to work after my maternity leave, but I think we'll hopefully be able to work up until the winter break which is good.

When do you plan on telling your school?
  • Awesome! I don't meet all that many Jamie's!

I think I'll tell at the beginning of the school year (which is August for me). I'm the "team lead" and I am sure they'll want to know as soon as possible. Haven't given it that much thought though, you?

I teach 3rd grade. I love that it falls right after Christmas break. I think that will be an easy transition for the kids but I'm nervous about being out that close to our state testing!
  • I teach 1-3 grade in a Montessori school. My plan is to take January to April off. Not the worst maternity leave in my building next year (someone is out October to January).

I teach preschool.  I think I will work until winter break.  I'm not sure about when to tell work
  • I'm a teacher but will be staying home next fall. I've taught 5th grade, kindergarten and 1st grade and the last two years I've been teaching preschool. Looking forward to being home with my kiddos but sad to not have a classful in the fall!!

  • I teach 8th grade science, but next year I'll be job sharing with another teacher at my school in 6th grade science. Part time! Woo hoo! I'm planning on telling my principal whenever I announce it to the rest of the word, probably the end of June. With my daughter I took off December through August, but with the job share next year I can only take 6 weeks. So that will be until March I guess. I figure it'll be fine because I'll only be working 2-3 days a week anyway.
  • I'm partially a teacher... Hard to explain, but I'm actually a behavioral therapist who works in a classroom with children age 5-9 with autism.
To be honest, I'm going to welcome the break even after winter break because the aggression levels I face on a daily basis. I'm currently trying not to tell anyone while keeping myself as safe as possible from any forsee-able injury (and I'm sure once my belly is there, it'll be a target for at least one kid in our room).

I have no clue when to tell my principal/supervisor, but I figure that will come whenever the time is right.
  • I'm in 4th grade. It's my favorite grade so far.

I love that I can work up to winter break. It's like getting an extra 2 weeks!

I'm going to tell my principal on the last day of school. I'm on the leadership team, and do a bunch of other critical stuff (mostly don't know how to say no) so I don't want to blindside him when I come back in August with a big ole bump.

I am a 4th grade teacher. I plan to take 13 weeks (Spring Break would be my last week off which gives me an extra week!). It is not an ideal time of year to take off but I wouldn't trade being pregnant and this baby for anything!

  • @jamiemichelle12 I don't know many Jamies either! :)

I would like go until September before I tell my school. That's when our year starts.  I feel like I'll have to tell them pretty soon after returning, because at that point it might be getting obvious.  This is my first though, so I don't know what to expect and when I'll "pop" lol.
  • I'm a middle school teacher. My hope was to be on leave from April-June, but sometimes you just can't plan these things. Starting off with the last two weeks of December will be awesome, though. I plan to then take January-March. I'll go back at the beginning of April for a couple of weeks before April vacation, and then it's the final stretch of the school year before summer. I have a feeling it'll be a great schedule. I plan on telling my principal in August.

  • Wow! Lots of teachers!

I teach second grade inclusion so a mix of regular and special education students in one room. It's always an adventure in my class. I love teaching and really could not imagine me doing anything else.

I am excited that I am due right at the end of Winter Break.  If I don't go early (I did with my son) then I would be able to stay out until Spring Break, which would be awesome!  I am just keeping my fingers crossed that this baby stays in to bake awhile longer than his/her brother did!

I am also my building's lead teacher which means I am in charge of PD and coaching new teachers, so I am planning on letting my principal know at the end of this school year (I will be 10 weeks), so she can decide who take over for me while I am out on leave.

  • I teach high school English, and I'm actually pretty stoked about January.  I am taking the full 12 weeks this time so will come back at the end of April, wrap things up for a month and a half, and then have an additional three months off.    Woohoo!

  • I'm in the same boat as @HalseytoBe !

I'm a high school English teacher. My EDD is January 2 but I was 6 days late with DD. The plan is to work up to delivery (or close) and then I'm hoping to take 14 weeks off. That'll put me back in school sometime in the middle of April, work 6 weeks and then be off for the summer. I actually kind of like being due at that time.
  • Wow, more teachers than I expected!

In my grandest plans I would have liked to be out April/early May through the summer, but I almost feel like after winter break is the next best thing! I can't imagine being due late summer or early fall, that would be unfortunate!

Today we got to do our FOSS kit inventories and I was the only one there from the K team. I almost cried (even though I wasn't really upset. Hormones are so weird). Had to carry them up and down the stairs to do the inventory, I'm so exhauseted! Luckily the 3rd grade team stepped in and helped me when they finished theirs.

What kind of maternity leave do you guys get? I'm at a charter school, I've been here for my whole teaching career, and we do things a little differently in many aspects. Wondering what "normal" public schools offer.
  • I teach highschool AP and preAP chemistry and will HOPEFULLY be teaching physics next year. I also coach volleyball and track. Both my other kids were born on a break (my 3yr old at the beginning of spring break, my almost 19mo at the beginning of fall break) so it feels weird to not be due on or around a break lol, but I don't think it'll be too bad.

I'm a fifth grade teacher due jan 7.y goal is to work until winter break and then stay out the rest of the school yr. I will tell my principal before I leave for the summer. It's number 3 for me so I'm hoping to be able to hide it that long.
  • Wow! There are a lot of teachers! I teach first grade in NC. I'm really worried about proctoring our state tests in a few weeks! Hopefully I won't get sick and result in a misadministration or have to leave a million times to use the restroom!

I'm a 6th grade teacher - It's quite convenient for a Jan due date. I plan on working as much as I can and then taking off until after spring break. That gives me all of April to cram for State Tests! :-) We're getting a new school next year - hopefully they put me near a bathroom! haha

I used to teach middle school English, and I loved it! I moved and now I teach at a community college. It's a pretty good gig too :-)

Edit: Forgot to add that I'll have to take the semester off because we don't have subs or maternity leave as an instructor. So, finances will be tighter, but it will be nice to stay home Jan - Aug.
