Son not Latching

my son is 3.5 weeks old, he has had trouble latching since birth but 3 days after he pretty much has refused to nurse since. I am pumping now but I still try sometimes to nurse but he just gets upset and screams til I put a bottle in his mouth. Has anyone else had this problem? Any suggestions or any success in late latching? I'm getting really discouraged that it won't ever happen and I will have to pump for the long haul

Have you met with a lactation consultant? Has your son been checked for tongue tie and lip tie?

Yes to both. I have done everything they said and tried everything the books/web recommend
  • My daughter was having the same problem. We worked with a LC for a long time and finally at 4 weeks, she started latching without assistance. Try to not let the baby get too upset. Tilt his head back slightly and let him open wide before putting the breast in. Aim for the back of the roof of the mouth. Sometimes we'll feed her a bit of bottle to calm her then try latching. Also try to hand express a bit of your milk so that he can smell it and taste it. I got really discouraged too but it was worth it when we finally succeeded. She's still not latching consistently but making progress.

My son was doing the same thing. Starting with a slow flow bottle nipple helped to calm him and I use a nipple shield to get him to latch. Now he's eating well and gaining weight, but I am wondering how to wean the use of the shield eventually. The LC gave is one shield and I also bought a another at target. I'm hoping that when he's older and a bit stronger, like @meghanjodino said at 4 weeks, he will be able to latch better.

Thanks guys he isn't quite four weeks so maybe there is still hope for us. I have tried the nipple shield and he doesn't seem to like that but I'm going to try a slow flow nipple @jlkapp85
  • My daughter latched but wouldn't suck and went into hysterical fits and lost more then 10% birthweight in 3 days so I've been pumping and supplementing. Mothers day night she was 1 day shy of 4 weeks and it was just she and I up at night and she kind of clawed at my breast while rooting and I figured what the heck and gave it a try, she latched on and ate till she was full! It was calm and perfect like all those pictures and commercials! Since then we nurse once a day and once at night and I'm slowly working up longer times, stick with it and just see if yours decides to come around....
    Good luck!
