Seriously worried

My lo was born May 5th and she sleeps constantly. I have to try to wake her up every single feeding and most of the time she doesn't wake. I feed her every three hours and all she takes is 1.5 oz. my doctor told me to come in on Friday, but I'm scared to wait that long! She is barely even getting 19 oz. in 24 hrs.

Re: Seriously worried

  • Oh my.. that's strange.. my boy was born on the 4th and he wakes himself every 2 hrs and eats 90 ml each time.. hmm..
is your baby gaining ? Can u tell ?

  • Is that during both day and night? My baby is like that all day long until 1am, and then he starts to wake up more frequently and was told that it is fine by the nurses. Also, are you on any pain medication? I stopped mine after the c section because I suspected that they are causing him to be too calm. Try to not swaddle him for a while, my baby wakes up more frequently when he is loose. I would push for an earlier appointment or at least to be looked at by a nurse if I was that worried!

I think your best bet is to talk to your doctor. A lot depends on how big they are. My LO is eating a lot, but he was 9 lb. at birth.
19 oz doesn't seem that bad? Can you call and talk to the nurse? Try not to worry. I know that's hard.

My daughter was born on May 6th and lost 13% of her birth weight, so we were sent to the hospital (on Mother's Day no less) and have to supplement with formula. Currently I am pumping almost a full ounce every 3 hours and topping of the bottle to 2 ounces. She still wants to and is willing to nurse (4 to 5 times a day). Overall, she is getting roughly 16 ounces in 24 hours plus whatever she gets when nursing. She's gained 7 ounces in 4 days, so she is on the right track.
  • Does your hospital have a place where you can weigh you LO? How many wet/dirty diapers are they having?

  • Babies have tiny, tiny tummies, so 19oz sounds like lots, actually.  As long as lo is happy, and having lots of dirty diapers, I think you're more than fine.  Just perhaps undress him for feedings so he wakes up more fully and gets a good feed in if you're worried.  The site below gives some idea of tummy sizes.

  • I felt the same way with my son. He is super hard to wake up, doesn't really cry, & since my milk came in getting him to nurse for more than 10mins has been a struggle. Fortunately at his week appointment his doctor said he is doing great! He left the hospital weighing 8.4lbs and is now up to 9.1lbs! I agree as long as your LO is happy, having dirty diapers, and not screaming her head off, you're more than fine!
  • Thank you all!

My son was 36 w 4 d when he was born. He was super sleepy and hard to arouse to feed. I had to strip him down to a diaper, tickle his feet and do skin to skin prior to feeds to get him awake. You could also change her diaper in the middle of a feed to wake her up.he's getting plenty to eat and gained 1 lb in 2 wks :)

  • My mom had always told me when I was a newborn I slept constantly and they would have to even put a warm wash cloth on my face to wake me to eat because I would just sleep all the time through anything. My parents joke I would have been the perfect baby for those newborn poses you see photographers do nowadays.

I was like that with my first. Now I'm on my third and I forgot how much they sleep. My only issue is she refuses to sleep on her own during the day and prefers me to a pacifier. Well starting around one or two am she refuses to sleep on her own.
