Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Putting to sleep

My son is 21 months old and I have a 4 month old also. The way I put the older to sleep is he sleeps in a bed and i sit with him until he falls asleep but now that my baby is getting older, it's getting much harder. Does anyone have advice on a different way to put him to sleep. He'll definitely not go in a crib. I'm going nuts!

Re: Putting to sleep

  • Do you have another parent there to help? Dad?

I definitely wouldn't sit in my son's bed each night until he falls asleep because I don't have that much time!

Our routine is this: jammies, brush teeth, read one book in bed, kisses and goodnight.

If you don't stay on his bed until he's asleep, what does he do? Get out of bed? If so, you have to keep putting him back in bed over and over again saying "it's bedtime, back to your bed". Consistency is key.

At nighttime it's fine, my hubby does it and it's all good. The problem is nap time. He cries if I leave but I need another system cuz this isn't working.
  • Hmmm I see what you mean. That would be hard with a 4 month old. Have you tried waiting until the younger baby is asleep before putting the older one down for his nap? I guess if he wont go down without you sitting there he will probably have to just wait until he is tired enough to fall asleep on his own or not nap at all (which sounds like trouble for the evening hours). At some point he will need to learn how to fall asleep without you. Is he in his own room? If so try putting a toddler gate at his door so when its nap time he is in his room and even if he is not sleeping he cant get out and roam the house. Try establishing a routine for taking a nap that does not involve you sitting with him. It may involve a bit of fussing at first but if he is tired he should settle down and eventually sleep. It might take a few days but Id bet by the end of the week he will be going down easier. In the first few days of the new routine Id make sure to put off his nap until he was really tired (and full) to make it easier. Good Luck!

Thanx so much. ill try that.m
  • My 17m DS is in crib and I rest my hand on his back for 5 minutes then leave (he is either asleep by then or cries for up to 10 min - on the rare occasion that doesn't work DH goes and co-sleeps with him). Then I go to my 3.5 yo DD and co-sleep until she falls asleep - 15 minutes top, or else I call DH in to give her company. DD and I have talked about her going to sleep by herself but we haven't gotten around to implementing it.
