Advice re: the dentist

I need some advice on what y'alls opinion on the dentist this late in the third trimester would be. Let me start off by saying that I am 38 weeks 4 days. And this baby is looking like she will come early (according to the doctors)... SO Im due next Friday, but really any day could be the day. Somewhere in the middle of the third trimester I had a small cavity in one of my molars (I actually think it may have been a filling that fell out). I did my research and found Dr.Google said it is mostly safe to go to the dentist except for the very beginning of the first trimester and the very end of the third trimester. Even still you should avoid the x-rays, which being that they need to establish that it is a cavity, im sure they would do an x-ray.

Now here I am at lunch yesterday, bit something wrong and got a sharp excruciating pain up my face from my tooth. It has obviously gotten much worse. I calmed it down with warm mouth wash and some orajel... But I have to be sooo careful how I eat or drink, nothing can touch the left side of my mouth or it will start up all over again.

What would you guys do...?! Wait it out just being very careful how you eat for the next week and a half or go see the dentist? I really don't want to risk messing something up with the baby by getting x-rays and pain meds at the dentist. But at the same time the tooth pain is really bad with just a tiny bit of cold water going on the wrong side of my mouth. Why oh why did I not take care of this a month ago!!! ugh.

It is so important to go to the dentist in pregnancy. Baby takes all of your nutrients and your teeth are a bit more deprived than usual, more susceptible to cavities. Also, your gums will be swollen and sensitive more so than normal as a typical side effect from pregnancy, which predisposes you to all kinds of problems. I have always gone for scaling every three months during my pregnancies. My last visit the dentist said there was absolutely nothing to scrape,my teeth were perfect, and my gums were still red swollen and irritated, so imagine if I hadn't been going! I will go for a full annual cleaning, exam and X-rays after I give birth but generally a dental X-ray can be safe it is an emergency. Get checked out for sure. You could have an abscess which can cause a lot of complications if the infection isn't treated.

  • I really would like to wait. I have kept up my 6 month cleanings. This one popped up in between then and now though. Im sure it is a combination of leaching nutrients and my absolute love for sweets while pregnant :D  . But to be honest I hate the dentist and fillings anyway. Im sure it'll add stress in addition to the meds to the baby. Plus I can only imagine the horror story of going into labor in the dentist chair. 2 weeks isn't too long to wait to have it looked at is it?

  • I went to the dentist when I was 4 weeks pregnant and they did x-rays, they just put a bunch of lead aprons on me and called my dr first. I went again like last month same thing. I would say go for it but maybe have them ok it with your OB first.

I just had a crown done at 38 weeks, ob said it was fine. Better to get it taken care of than end up with an infection.
  • I went to the dentist yesterday at 39+2 weeks. They did the normal cleaning but no xray
I'm sure if u needed an xray they could do it as long as they doubled up on the shield.
  • I work at a dental office, they should require a note from your doctor saying what you can and can not have, Double shielded if you can have an X-ray [by the Sound of it you may need. Root canal and crown], and pOssibly antibiotics if needed. I definitely would go in and have it looked at. You don't want to leave it untreated if you do have An infection, it could spread. But it's completely up to you and your level of pain and willingness. They will have to use local anesthetic, which should be on the note if you can have it. Also, try warm salt water rinses and a cotton ball with vanilla extract, never personally tried it, but my patients have said it works!
  • I had a root canal and a crown put on during my second trimester. Dentist cleared everything with my Dr and all was well. When they needed to do an X-ray, they double shielded me. Dentist was very kind about everything. Thankful they were able to do something about it then rather than waiting until after the baby was born.

  • I am a dentist and although we don't encourage patients to come in during their third trimester, it's more because they are too uncomfortable to lay in the chair than because of any risks. The anaesthetic is perfectly safe (although check that they have one with no adrenaline). The x-Rays are even technically safe and being pregnant I have stayed in the room with some child patients to take them myself, but they should only really take one if they can't be sure whether or not you have an infection. One dental x-Ray is less radiation than living on earth for one day so don't worry about them.
The bottom line is, if you're stressing about the cavity, and having a lot of pain frequently, the stress hormones are probably more of a risk to your baby than anything the dentist would do. Plus, it's not like you're going to have tons of time after the baby comes to go in!
  • Thanks guys!!! My OB gave me the go ahead to make an appointment today. I've got to track down someone that can take me soon. Let's pray it's just a reeeeally bad cavity.
