I just found out I'm strep B positive. I really was hoping I wasnt. I am a FTM, does anyone have any experience with going through labor while being on antibiotics for strep B? Any comments about this are welcome.

Also I just found out they only use penicillin which my husband happens to be deathly allergic to and that could possible me genetic....

  • I was.  The only issue I had was with different nurses.  So, if they do NOT dilute the antibiotics, it will BURN like HELL.  MAKE SURE they dilute it with saline.  It was like a truck was running over my are.  I balled.  and when she came back to give me more, I was scared.... Then a new nurse came in and was like, 'oh, we'll just dilute it.'......

    Otherwise, that's the only difference!

I'm hoping this time around, I'm negative!!!
    GOOD LUCK!

I had it with my first and will need antibiotics with this one too. I'm not gonna lie it burns when they give it to you but I didn't know they can dilute it so I'm definitely going to ask if they can do that for me this time around to ease the pain. Good luck : )
  • Also positive, STM are you confined to the bed for labour because of this or am I still allowed shower/bath?
  • I was and it was fine. I had an IV and could walk around and still hold a leg etc.

  • I had it with my first, wasn't a big deal, just had to be on antibiotic during labor. I have my test for it at my next appointment.
  • I had it with my two previous births. Total non event. I am allergic to penicillin so they substituted accordingly.

I had it with my first and labor was too fast for me to get antibiotics. DS was just fine.
  • I'm confused as to why your husband being allergic would effect you though....?

Do you mean you're worried about the baby being allergic in utero? That would not happen.

You are not confined anywhere. It runs for about an hour every 4 hours and you can still go in the shower etc. you just may have to come to the hospital earlier than laboring at home because they want you to be treated at least 4 hours before actu birth.

  • I was with my first, and will be taking my test for this one next week. It was no biggie, just an IV drip that I could walk around with. I'm also allergic to penicillin and they subbed it for something else
  • I have my swab at my appointment next week but asked my OB about what antibiotics they give if I was positive at my 32 week appointment because I am allergic to 6 common antibiotics (i know, I'm super special). Of the 5 options they could give for GBS, I am not allergic to 2, which was a huge relief. So there are other options out there they can give besides penicillin.
  • Also positive, STM are you confined to the bed for labour because of this or am I still allowed shower/bath?

I asked my midwife this yesterday because I want to shower/bath and she said it does not effect being able to do so. She said the nurses will give me a shot approximately every 4 hours. I just had my test done yesterday so still awaiting results. But I am glad to know I will still be able to sit in the bath.
  • I had it with my previous 5 pregnancies, and will be tested next week for this pregnancy. It's no biggie, honestly. Just an iv drip while in labor. Yes, it burns a little, but nothing that wasn't unbearable. For me anyways. Don't stress, it's truly not an issue. I'm pretty sure it's fairly common to have it, and I've also been told that once you have it one pregnancy, you usually have it in the others. I'm fully prepared to test positive for this, and to be treated with antibiotics.

Yes! It hurt sooooo much in my arm/hand. I feel like I did have it diluted, but I'm definitely going to make sure this time, if I'm positive again. Maybe I'm a wimp!
  • I had it with my first and will get tested today at my apt for this go around. I don't remember it burning or honestly really getting it. I assume they added it to the IVs they hooked me up to when I was induced.

I had it with my first and just had an extra bag up on the iv. No biggie. And it didn't hurt for me.

Anyone try or planning to try some of the home remedies for this?

I am. Lots of probiotics. Kefir and kombucha. 2 cloves of garlic daily and apple cider vinegar baths.
