constipated

Hello everyone! Sorry to lower the tone but I am 15 weeks and suffering with constipation. I know this can be a normal symptom of pregnancy but it's the stomach cramps that worry me. I get them while I'm suffering and then when I finally manage to go there seems to be after pains and ceamps is this normal?

Re: constipated

  • Hi @steph110981! A couple of weeks ago I was very constipated and had also suffered cramps due to this. Best to see your doctor and ask for some safe laxatives. I don't like taking them but it does help with clearing the bowels and it will minimises the painful cramps :) try drink a lot of water as well.
    Hope this helps xx

  • Green veggies help too!! High fiber foods and like PP said ask your doctor about a safe laxative!!
  • My midwife recommended 6-8 oz warm prune juice. I put mine in the microwave for 30 seconds. It helps.
  • There are also syrups with prune juice to which you add warm water. I was very blocked too (people mistaking my bloated belly for a pregnancy belly). I have been drinking it for 3 days now, about two glasses a day, and at least things are moving somewhat more naturally down there now. Not perfectly, but at least daily without unnatural pushing from my side. Good luck!
  • Hi Steph-I was having the same issue and my doctor recommended colace. I've been taking for a few days, and it seems to have helped slightly. They let me know if the colace didn't work, I could move on to miralax. I'd definitely reccomend calling your doctor, as constipation is terrible! Good luck to you!!

  • I was suffering from this terribly up until 12 weeks. I started eating watermelon since I can't get a veggie down the hatch to save my life! It's helped tremendously! Apparently they're really high in fiber.
  • I was constipated in the beginning (wasn't drinking my daily coffee because I had an aversion to it) so I was taking stool softened daily. They definitely helped. My doctor also recommended colace but I was grossed out too much by it because my nausea was so bad then. Now I'm back to drinking coffee and all good.
  • As well as all the above, try and have a cup of hot water with lemon juice first thing in the morning before you eat. I have started doing that and I think it has really helped.
  • My doctor told me I could use a glycerin suppository. I used it once and it did the trick!

    Chia seeds in your water!
  • Omg omg omg!!!!
After about a week, I finally went to the bathroom!!!
I feel like the office is an inappropriate place to shout this so I'm doing so here.

My dr told me to take Colace, it finally helped after about 3 days. That was on top of daily Metamucil and fiber gummies.
I thought the Colace was going to make me feel really uncomfortable but it didn't at all. I took one in the morning and one at night. It's not like a laxative at all.

    Good luck ladies.
Hoping relief comes your way soon
  • Exercise can also help with constipation.  Running or doing bicycle kicks does wonders for gas and bm's.

  • Milled Flaxseed (1tbsn) or Physillium Husks work a treat if u take daily with your cereal or in a fruit smoothie. The Flaxseed is also an excellent source of Omega's. Another option is just plain prunes or even dates will work a treat. Try to stay away from laxatives as there are so many natural options before the medicinal line.
  • My doctor prescribed me fiber supplements, you can also get them over the counter
