Baby Sleep

My daughter is 5 weeks old. She refuses to sleep without being rocked. I'm positive she's ready for sleep because of her sleep cues. I try not to let her get over tired but she fights sleep so bad it's almost inevitable. Do any of you rock your babies or do you go by another sleep method? If you do put your baby to sleep while still groggy and awake, at what age did you start sleep training and how? What steps exactly did you take to accomplish your goal?

Usually when my 5 week old is fighting sleep it's because he's still got a burp lurking around from his last feeding.

  • Have you tried a warm calm bath before bed? Even if she does not need to be cleaned just setting her in a warm bath and letting her calm down. Then rub her down with night time lotion or lavendar essential oils. I use Johnson and Johnson on my daughter and then I but Bath and Body works Lavendar Sleep therapy lotion on myself and rock my daughter to sleep. I love rocking her to sleep everynight. Just watching her drift off melts my heart.

I've been trying the techniques all week and it's worked!
  • My son is 5 weeks today and I love to rock him to sleep, my favorite is putting him on my chest and rocking in the recliner. I am trying to get him on a schedule....he likes to wake up around 1-2am and just be awake for 2 hours...and then knock back out. drives me nuts!

Have you tried using a swing? I just got a fisher price cradle swing and my son loves it! I also agree with the first poster, sometimes when my son is getting fussy and fighting sleep is because he still has to burp or pass gas. I know not all moms like them but do you use a pacifier at all? My son only likes his when he is in the car and very rarely at night but when he does take it at night it's amazing how calm he gets!
  • I rocked my son asleep almost every night until he was a little over 2. We established a routine where I would start rocking him at 8:30pm and he was out by 9pm and in his crib, sleeping all night. He's never had an issue transitioning from being rocked to being placed directly in his bed awake. Do what works best for you
  • I've read that babies this age cant be spoiled and won't "learn" bad habits yet. They can't self sooth so do anything you can to get your LO to sleep, for your sanity too. I think i read that sleep training shouldnt start til 2 or 3 months.
