My son was born last night after 7 hour labor and 10 minutes pushing at 40w2d. I want to share bc I was so freaked out before birth that I would be another statistic of FTMs that were way overdue or needed an induction or had terribly long labors that struggled to progress. I am in no way bashing moms who had that. Each woman and every birth is unique. But I wanted to share that IT DOESN'T NECESSARILY HAVE TO BE THAT WAY! Take heart!
My body went into labor on its own like the brilliant thing that it is. Around 11:30 pm on Sunday I felt crampy. I would get two or three cramps an hour. They didn't seem like early labor (they were) but I took 2 Tylenol PMs every 4 hours just in case. Thanks to that, I slept in until about noon on Monday, waking up only during bad cramps and to go to the bathroom. I lost my mucus plug and believe me, it was obvious that's what it was. Zero confusion. At noon the cramps subsided so I felt sad. However, I was very well rested for what was to come.
Around 3pm my "cramps" came back but they were 20 minutes apart. By 5pm, just two hours later, they were 3 minutes apart! I called my midwife (we had been touching base through out they day) and she said she'd be over soonish. Later she told me she expected me to be 1cm and to tell me to go sleep and wait. She got to my house at 8pm and guess what...9cm! Although she never told me the number, she told me I was very close and to try to labor standing up for a while to let gravity work. Then she hurried to tell my husband and mom to fill up the birth tub and fast!
My son was in my arms 2 hours later. I couldn't believe it. I pushed for 10 minutes. My body did ALL the work. Because our bodies are made for this! And my baby wasn't little...8lbs7oz.
So all those statistics that mess with our heads. ..screw them! Your body will take care of you and your baby when the perfect time comes.
Thanks for reading! Xoxoxo
P.S. the app won't let me attach a picture so I'm changing my profile pic to my son's face.
Re: FTMs! Fast and med-free birth is totally possible! (birth story)
I'm so glad your birth went so smoothly. Congratulations!!
Franco Paul born 6/4/15 at 39 weeks. Mila Francesca born 10/19/13 at 37 weeks. Both born via C-Section after 6 years of fertility treatments, disappointments and losses. Love them!!
I hope mine goes the same, I'm being insanely positive that LO arrives soon, I'm 40+4 and so wanting a water birth at my birth centre. So good to hear a positive birth story, our bodies are pretty cool!
You can do it! Best of luck to you and your husband. Xoxox
