2nd Trimester

Breathing difficulty

Hi, I'm 15wks pregnant and finding it difficult to breath at night when I lay down to go to sleep. I lie on my left side as much as possible , it just feels like I can feel my heart throbbing in my stomach chest and throat and feels as though I'm not breathing in enough oxygen! I'm not overweight and I've only gained 1lb onto my pre-preg weight! Should I be worried or is this normal for most??

Re: Breathing difficulty

  • I've never heard of such a thing. Do you have asthma? Allergies? Are you a smoker or former smoker? Every had sleep apnea? If you don't have a reason, you should find out.

  • I had a similar issue and my doctor recommended a iron and vitiman c pill before bed.. They seemed to help quite a bit
  • Shortness of breath is common during pregnancy as are heart palpitations but it would definitely be worth mentioning the symptoms to your doctor.

I've found if I lie on my back I can't breathe whatsoever. It's terrifying! I'm going to mention it to my doc but you're not alone. I work in an icu as a nurse so I'm hoping I run into one of our cardiologists later and can pick their brain. This screams cardiac to me. Let me know if you find out anything!
  • I had a asthma as a child but no problems since, never smoked! Going to the doctor tomorrow so hopefully get some insight! Scary as my bump isn't even that big so it's not like I'm carryin more than usual ! Really uncomfortable feeling ....
  • Hey kellyw88 - a few days late - I'm curious what your doc said. I'm also 15 weeks and have not gained weight. I've felt like my lungs have been really heavy (on and off) for about a month regardless of weather or activity.

I (rarely) took an inhaler for exercise. My brothers and dad have terrible asthma though. I asked my doc last week. She didn't seem concerned at all and told me I could take my inhaler if I wanted. I just don't feel very comfortable taking it.
  • The doctor examined my lungs and said my air ways were clear so no asthma but my resting pulse was very high so they transferred me to hospital. They done bloods which Were fine and a heart reading which gave the same result a high pulse rate but because my airways were clear and I wasn't in pain as such they said there's nothing to worry about and just to keep an eye on it ! Also they were tryin to put it down to anxiety ? But I don't think so, It's really frustrating tho!!
  • I hope you feel better! The few times I have taken the inhaler, it didn't seem to do much. Like you said, not knowing can be incredibly frustrating.
