Trouble getting LO to take milk from cup

Hi Ladies,

My DS is drinks water all day from a sippy cup, as well as other more advanced cups (straw and Munchkin 360 deg training cup). He still takes two bottles a day with milk, one before each nap / attempted nap. He loves the milk and I've really been wanting to get him off the bottle, but I am trouble getting him to take milk from a cup or anything other than the bottle. He always acts totally surprised and put off by milk offered in a cup. I just invested in a fancy stainless steel sippy cup that has a longer / narrower spout I though he might accept. Not so much, although he will drink other things from the new cup.

Any thoughts or suggestions? He does get plenty of calcium in other forms, including cheese and several yogurts daily.

Kids don't actually NEED milk, especially if they are getting calcium from other sources but I'm sure it helps before nap time. I would just keep pushing the cups and get rid of the bottles all together. Eventually he will realize that IF he wants milk, he has to use a cup because that's the only option.

One thing we had to do with my son during this transition was take the lid off the sippy cup to show him that milk was in the cup. He would push it away before we did this because he thought it was water. Once I actually showed him there was milk inside he started drinking it. Just a thought.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. Our DD is the same. Every once and a while Ill try giving her milk in a cup again but she pretty much rejects it every time. I figure eventually she will come around but as long as she is drinking water (staying hydrated) and getting calcium other ways don't stress too much. I know others who have added chocolate to the milk or given vanilla almond milk to encourage drinking from a cup. I dont really want to introduce sweets that way so we are holding off for now.

I just got DS to kick the bottle habit. He needed it to sleep. I started using a Nuk bottle exclusively (with sippy cup during the day) then switched the nipple out for a sippy one. He fussed a while but it only took 3 days till he just accepted it. I've heard of parents always putting milk in a straw cup and water in a sippy or something like that so they know what to expect in the cup.

Yes, this is kind of what I am thinking. I think he really doesn't like being surprised by milk in his "water cup." I am trying a few other cups that I am hoping he will come to associate with milk. Both are sippy cups but have a different type of spout (more like a nipple shape). He always takes a little chamomile tea at night, which he used to take in a bottle, but is now accepting from a stainless steel sippy cup. I am going to try mixing milk w/ the tea in that cup and see if he will come around.
