False labor or real thing?

I'm 39 weeks. I have been having contractions since about 5am this morning (so almost 12 hours). However they are pretty mild and irregular. I've been timing them and sometimes they are close together and sometimes several minutes apart. Also they have not really increased in pain level. They are painful but mostly feel like really bad cramps and a sore lower back with my belly tightening. To me it sounds like false labor but I'm a ftm. I have an appointment early tomorrow morning so I'm thinking I should just wait it out but I wanted any suggestions or opinions! Like I said ftm not sure what to expect.

Re: False labor or real thing?

  • Call your dr's office and see what they think. Don't be embarrassed to be wrong as a FTM. They see it all the time. You can also always head over to the hospital and get checked out. Everyone's bodies are different and what may be false labor to one of us could be the real thing for you. Better call and get told what to do by your dr than take someone's advice on a community support site and make a mistake. :) Good luck! Hope it's the real thing!

  • I have been having false labor, and now I'm afraid I won't know when it's the real thing. Like you I woke up at 5am with them on Friday morning. Early Saturday morning I went to the hospital because they were 5min apart for 2hrs. Went to the hospital and they never got closer together. Now it's Sunday and I have still been getting them every 10 min. I can't do anything, and nothing makes them feel better! I know being pregnant is suppose to be uncomfortable but isk if I can handle more days of this. Plus I get zero sleep. It sucks! (Sorry I used your post to vent)
  • Vent away. That's exactly how I feel. I can't sleep at all with them. They won't stop but the pattern is just not what it needs to be. It sucks because now I feel like once real labor starts I won't know and also that I'll be so exhausted I won't be able to handle them once it gets worse. I hope she comes soon! I'm more than ready.
  • I'm in the same boat. I'll have an entire day of contractions but then they taper off during the night. It's usually if I've done a lot the day before. It's super frustrating because I think that maybe this is it then nothing. I'm due in two days and have an appointment tomorrow with ultrasound so we will see if all the contractions of the past week have made any progress. I'm hoping all the contractions will make for an easier labor practice makes perfect type of thing....Fingers crossed
  • I'm not there yet, only 37 weeks... but for what it's worth, my MW explained that the 5 minute rule is an average... if you have contractions that are 3, 2, 7, 7, 6, 4, 7, and so on... if it AVERAGES to 5, you should go ahead and at least get checked out. She said someone came in once and was almost 10cm... she asked her why she didn't come sooner and the woman said "because my contractions were never consistently 5 minutes apart". So... just something to keep in mind. Good luck! hope you meet LO soon!
  • Sounds like false labor to me. Trust me, you will know when the contraction is the real thing! I was making dinner last Sunday when I felt the first real contraction in my butt. I felt like I had to go to the bathroom for a good minute and so I decided to see what was going on. I went to the bathroom, got up, and saw blood. I called my Dr immediately and was told to go in for observation. Labor progressed and so did the contractions. Never be afraid to call!

I am in the same boat and it's frustrating. Have been having crampy contractions relatively steadily since Saturday night, but the timing isn't consistent. I called the dr anyway because there is a family history of people not feeling any serious pain until transition, but I wish DS would just make his decision already!
  • Thank you for all the input. The contractions stopped late last night. I had a dr appointment this morning and he said I'm probably getting close to real labor and my body is preparing but I'm still under 4 cm. it's a little frustrating. I'm definitely ready for her to be here but I don't want to rush it either.
