Inducing

At my 36 week appointment my doctor ordered to have an ultrasound. According to that, my baby weighs 6lbs and 11 oz. I was figuring that if I carried her to my due date (June 3) she would be a big baby. My Dad's birthday is May 25. I was thinking about asking my doctor to induce me on that day so that she could be born on my dad's birthday. My doctor has mentioned inducing me at 39 weeks because of her size. Do you think being induced on the 25 would be safe?

Here is a good link to help you navigate your decision. You can always say no as it's your birth and your baby.

I'm an advocate for informed decisions. Good luck to you.

  • Just because they induce on the 25th doesn't mean you'll deliver on the 25th. I was induced with my 2nd child and had her two days later

  • My doctor will not induce me a day before 39 weeks even though my last baby was a 39-weeker and over 9 pounds. :-/ He's guessing this one will be 10 pounds at 39 weeks. Ugh. I want her to be safe and healthy but I also don't want to rip in half! Lol.
  • At my appointment last Friday, my doctor asked if we would consider an induction at 39 weeks, mainly because of my age (I'm 36) and that I have GD.  She definatley does not want me going past my due date, of June 9th. We are actually considering it, if she will do it on the date that we want, mostly for convenience sake for work for myself & DH, being able to easily drop off our dog at my parents house, so we can just leave the house in ease and stress free.

  • Those weights are just estimates, of your goal is to have a healthy baby then focus more on organ development than weight or birthdays. Inducing before you are ready can cause a lot of distress to the baby if estimates are off. Please make an informed educated decision based on facts and babies health not personal preference.

If you're medicated for GD that makes sense...my friend was induced at 39 weeks with GD because it's advisable to reduce the baby's exposure to the medication when it can be safely delivered. Mom and baby did great. Labor was 13 hours from induction to birth and baby was 6 lbs 12oz.
  • I was induced with my first because of high blood pressure. I was induced at 9 am on the 4th and LO arrived at 6pm on the 5th. Induction can be a long process which uses chemical to simulate a natural process. Baby is more likely to get stressed with an induction. I would really only do it again if absolutely medically necessary.

It is also worth asking the doctor if your body is favorable for an induction. If you haven't starred dilating or effacing, induction will be longer and less likely to be successful.
