2nd Trimester

Lamaze Classes

(First time mom) I live in a small town and we have a nice hospital but they can't deliver babies because they don't have someone to do emergency surgery. So I drive about 45 miles to see my OB doctor. So what I'm getting at is, I don't have access to anything like the lamaze classes. So I'm just wondering what they're about, how important they are and if I should/could find one online.

Re: Lamaze Classes

  • I have seen that some birthing classes are available online, but am still trying to learn more about the value of the classes a well
  • Loading the player...
  • I drive an hour to my OB office as well....I honestly didn't really consider taking any classes myself but now I feel like I should do something to be more prepared. Maybe YouTube will have some good ones?!

    Pregnancy Ticker

  • I took a birthing class when I was pregnant with my first. My honest opinion is these classes will probably benefit someone having a natural birth the most. I was resigned to getting an epidural and I seriously did not learn anything new that I hadn't heard about before. They discuss pain management through breathing techniques but you could probably find this information in a book or a YouTube type thing.

If you are looking for are hands on experience and want to actually be in a classroom setting then I would say yes, find a class. But if you are good with reading up or watching a show then I would suggest skipping the class and finding a good book or show regarding the subject. Good luck!
  • I think a big part of this decision is the baby's father. If he's involved or trying to be involved, ask him how important it is to you both as parents. Sometimes the men can benefit more from those classes because it makes them feel like they can do something to help rather than feeling blindsided and a touch helpless when you're in labor and in pain. If it's something that would mean something to you both, I say it's worth the drive. Make a night out of it, maybe there's somewhere you both like to eat or somewhere you like to go near your hospital.

Do you have Babys'r'us near you? They offer free classes, the only one they offer that you have to pay for is the CPR class, and that's because it's hosted by the American Heart Association. I'm not sure about where you live, but the ones near us are all hosted by local hospitals and doctor's practices, midwives, etc.

I've started Hypnobabies. It's a form of meditation and daily positive affirmations. I am doing this instead of Lamaze. It focuses on breathing and how to meditate. My girlfriend recommended it to me. This is what she used when she was pregnant and she found it very helpful. It is very calming so far and helps take the chatter out of your head.

Babycenter has a free class, that I think would be enough if you don't have a goal of going natural. My husband and I are taking Birth Boot Camp online, but it it very couple and natural childbirth based. Gentlebirth and Hypnobabies are pretty good home natural birth programs. My fave book is Birth Skills. There are some good DVDs on Amazon, too. Laugh and Learn about Childbirth gets really good reviews.
