Big Baby and Appointment Today

Hey guys so today I not only turned 36weeks I also had an appointment today for the Group B strep. I was extremely nervous so when my doctor came in Oliver decided to retreat under my ribs and hide so she couldn't get his heartbeat well. He's also measuring a week ahead at 37 weeks which is a big jump from the 2days he was measuring ahead. She wants to do an ultrasound on me next week to check his size. This never happened with my last baby and he was 7lbs 3oz when born. I am 100% focused on having a natural childbirth, does anyone know what they do for larger babies? She also checked me and said I'm losing small bits of my plug and that I'm 50% thinned 1.5cm dialated and that I should pay attention to my contractions because when I go I could go fast. Well that was my baby update... I'm really worried about his size now...

One week is nothing this late in the game. Baby positioning can change the way they are measuring by at least two weeks. I'm surprised your OB made a big deal of it. Additionally, how much you're dialated and effaced really doesn't mean anything either. I walked around 3cm dialated for weeks with my second. I'm 36 weeks now and 1cm dialated with a soft cervix. I wouldn't worry about any of this.

From my understanding, it varies as to what's done for large babies, just as it does for small babies. However, in my family, babies tend to be bigger, and my mom delivered all of us (except for the twins, who, at ~6lbs and ~8lbs were the second biggest twins in the history of the hospital at the time) without a c section or epidural - including my brother who was well over 10lbs at birth. Good luck!

ETA Also, the reason that the twins were delivered via c section wasn't because of their size, but because one of them was breech and there was a problem with his umbilical cord. If that hadn't been the case, my mom would have delivered both of them vaginally, likely without an epidural, as well - she's one tough cookie :)

  • Don't worry too much about measuring just a week ahead on a fundal measurement .. 2 weeks either way is normal. Most docs will do a scan around this time to check size, fluid, position..and most babies aren't "big" and if they are a bit "big" have no impact on delivery.. Even ultrasounds aren't accurate measuring at this point.. There would have to be quite a large discrepancy.. What I'm trying to say is your OB is not panicking because you measured 37 weeks when you are 36 weeks.. So try not to worry
  • From what I understand, measuring 2 weeks either way is totally normal. My baby is currently measuring 3 weeks ahead, they haven't really discussed any plans. Tomorrow I have another sonogram to see where she is. You'll be fine.

I have a friend who had ultrasounds estimating their babies to be over 8.5lbs scared them into a c section and the baby was only 5lb 13oz. I was told my baby is measuring big right now I'm 36 weeks and they are saying I'll have a 9-10 pounder if I go the full 40. I refuse to let them scare me into a c section. You know your body best go with your gut. GL!

I am 33 weeks and had an ultrasound about 5 weeks ago...the dr told me that my baby was measuring about 3 weeks ahead! Totally freaked me out. Long story short, I learned that ultrasounds are not the most accurate way to measure the baby when our last ultrasound showed that he was measuring right on schedule.

I'm a FTM and certainly no expert on the subject of birthing larger babies naturally. But when I toured the local birth center, their largest baby was a little over 12lbs!! I am having a natural birth as well and when I found that out, it gave me some encouragement that even if baby is a little bit larger than most, doesn't mean natural birth isn't a possibility :)
  • Ultra sounds can be off on weight by 2 lbs either way. And measuring only a week ahead is nothing. Baby could have just been in a funny position and stretching you. And as someone who walked around with my last at 50% effaced and a 6-7 for over a week...yeah. 1 cm dilated is really no big deal. Lol. I'm usually dilated at 2-3 by 35 weeks. But that is also just me and how my body works. Fifth time mom veteran over here!
