Babies and room temp

Hi all, I'm very nervous that LO will overheat this summer (I'm a FTM if not obvious). I read that the room should be between 67-72 degrees F. Wha my are you all doing to maintain this? DH worries an AC would make it too cold, and I was reading that fresh air is better to prevent SIDS. What to do? DH didn't want to install an AC in the babies room and I almost lost my sh*t on him but I figured this can wait until it's not late on a work night!

Re: Babies and room temp

  • I've been wondering about this, too, but for the opposite reason. I'm more worried about it being too chilly at night. Example - we usually have a window open (fresh air!) and its been great with me feeling like a furnace, but overnight temps have been mid 40s. Obviously I can close the window, and we can turn on the heater in the bedroom a little bit, but its easy to get overly warm that way. Also, once we are in the heat of summer the open window with a fan most likely will work, but...?

  • I've also been wondering about this. We live in Arizona and during the summer have outside temperatures of 100+ degrees during the day. Even running our ac nonstop it would be near impossible to maintain 72 degrees in our house, we usually set the thermostat at 78 during the summer and our electric bill is outrageous. Hopefully keeping fans going will be enough!

We're gonna try to maintain 72 degrees in their room. Most of the baby monitors have a temperature gauge on them. We also thought about getting a temperature gauge seperate the monitor. We're gonna just have to experiment because the nursery is the furthest from ac and heat unit.

@hoodoll82 I had no idea fresh air helped prevent SIDS. I only like having the windows open in the fall and spring, the summer is way to sticky and humid here in Indiana!
  • we're keepn our ac in the living room and in my step daughters room...keep the babys window open for fresh air is prolly a good idea, (something i didnt know) another thing is not to cover your baby up with a blanket....if anything only a receiving one.

The SIDS/fresh air thing was from Dr. Google so take that as you will! But yeah, I'm in FTM irrational panic mode... It's already in the 80's (not typical) in Boston and I thought I was going to sweat to death last night!

Air movement is what helps prevent SIDS according to what I read. So if you can't have a window open, a fan can also help. We didn't freak about temp with DS. Our pediatrician told us after the first few weeks, overheating is a bigger concern than being too cold, for what it's worth.
  • This has been driving me crazy too as I am an uber planner but can't know what temps the nights will be end of June. We too prefer no a/c if possible for fresh air. It's making it hard also to know too if I need warmer clothing too in small sizes for early morning walks. Trying to just wait and go with the flow but it is hard!!
  • From what I understand, it's more circulating air than fresh air. You can have a fan pointed up to the sky to help or a ceiling fan on. They recommend no blankets with baby bc of strangulation. We usually keep our house around 76/78 and plan to dress her in a onesie and lightweight sleep sack/swaddle

We live in south Texas and the summers are unbearably hot. That being said, we just got a new AC and the baby's room is FREEZING! I'm thinking we are going to close the vent and just leave the door open or get a fan? I don't know, but even in my constant hot state, I was freezing in there yesterday!
  • We turned the sitting room of our master bedroom into a mini nursery. It's sorta blocked off from our air vents... I'm thinking of getting a small room air circulator (similar to fan) to put in there. It was only $25 at Target. Can't hurt, right? They sell and expensive version at Buy Buy Baby but from what I can tell, the only real difference is the cord concealment.

It's the same here and being on bed rest DH didn't say anything about my turning the ac on! I hope you can stay cool too!
