How to get rid of swollen legs

Does anyone know the fastest way to reduce the water retention due to excessive IV's? My legs are so swollen and heavy. Its very hurtful and uncomfortable to move or walk.

Re: How to get rid of swollen legs

  • I just found it took time, about a week and a bit. Mine are back to normal size but still feel bruised when touched.

In the early stages of my pregnancies, prenatal massage helped reduce fluid. But now I just do the good old keeping my feet elevated or even compression socks.
  • I have found and was also recommended by my doctor to go stand/walk in a pool. The water pressure puts the fluid back into your circulation and helps your body excrete it. It has helped me tremendously. You can't swim because your legs need to be under the water as far as possible, and it takes awhile (I go for about an hour a day), but has worked great for me! Hope you find something that works! Good luck!!

I'm 37 weeks and suddenly retaining so much water I feel like elephant girl! I'm totally trying the pool thing. Thank you!

You're body will get rid of the extra fluid on its own. So, you will notice you will start peeing a lot . Keep your legs elevated when resting and walk around. It will take about a week or so for it to go away.
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • I had terrible swelling in my feet and legs! One day, I shoved my feet into a pair of sneakers that I hadn't fit in for months (pre pregnancy size shoes). Walked around in them for a few hours. Took them off and Bam! Swelling gone! Must've been something about the compression - they were really jammed in there.
  • I have already delivered but had a few bags of IV's due to complications. I can barely walk due to my huge legs and sore hips i do keep my legs elevated to no avail. I have shooting pains going up my legs at times. I just read that a diuretic could help.
  • I also have this problem. Unfortunately bc I developed postural tachycardia (slightly improved now that I am 4 days post delivery), I can't take a diuretic but it may be something you can ask your Dr about if the swelling does not reduce soon. There are apparently natural diuretics as well such as cucumbers and watermelon.

Just out of curiosity, have those who posted with postpartum edema weighed themselves? I just did yesterday and I was 145 lbs the day of labor and am now 147. I'm super depressed about this as I was anticipating a drop in weight after delivery. One can argue that I may have 10 lbs of fluid retention but I don't think it's that severe....

Drink lots of water, wear compression socks, walk (not just stand) as much as possible. I had IV swelling too and I followed this advice. Swelling went down in about 4 days.
  • I'm so glad that I'm not the only one who is suffering from this.  I've been concerned about the swelling as well as the fact that my weight hasn't changed since before giving birth.  So concerned that I think I've started to freak out my DH.  It's comforting to know that there is relief in sight!
  • I went in had a c/s to have my 9 lb 8 oz baby & I'm 3 lbs under the weight I was at just prior to delivery.
