Breast feeding

I was thinking about breast feeding or pumping when my baby girl comes out but I have a couple questions for experince mommys who have done this - does it hurt? Does it really help you lose weight? How does it help baby? How many times do you have to pump a day?

Re: Breast feeding

  • Everyone's experience with breastfeeding is different. You should contact a lactation consultant or your local chapter of La Leche League if you have questions, issues or pain while breastfeeding and pumping.

From personal experience, I would say two things.
Breastfeeding is the hardest thing I've tried in my life. It's not that hard for others but for me it was. Be prepared with information and help when you need it. Lactation consultants are a godsend.
Pumping is so many extra steps that are not worth it to me. If you have to because of work that's one thing, but I would never choose to exclusively pump just because.

  • My personal experience:
Breast feeding can be very difficult- but if you use the resources available to you then the benefits are great. It did greatly help me lose weight with my DD and DS. The amount you have to pump depends on your lifestyle. I work full time so I need to provide enough milk for the 8 hours I'm at work everyday. The number of times you'll have to pump will depend on your supply- which can be a struggle too. I always think it's worth a try- especially for the benefits for baby. Definitely use the lactation consultant at the hospital for techniques and reassurance. And remember that whatever decision you make- you are making the right decision for you. Everyone is different. Good luck!!!

  • FTM here and I was very worried it was going to be hard or I wouldn't be able to do it. I had a few hard days when my son was born but now I find it incredibly easy. Sure, I can't go out of the house as much as I'm sure I would like but it's very worth it because it's so benificial to my child.
  • I had my daughter on Thursday and she nursed with a perfect latch right away. More uncomfortable than painful imo. Then the next day it was like she didn't know how to suck. Shed latch, but then just fall asleep. I had to pump and syringe feed her with a little sugar water added. Still, wasn't too awful. Lanolin is amazing for the dryness. Now we're home and I'm doing both. I try breast first and sometimes she'll feed for about ten minutes. I'm pumping about 25ml of colostrum every 1.5-2hours and my boyfriend syringe feeds her in 3hr intervals, even if she does latch for those rare10minutes. I'm hoping she'll feed better once my milk comes in and I won't have to pump as much. So far I've lost 13lbs and she weighed 6.12 but I don't know if it as anything to do with breastfeeding, everyone's different for initial weight loss.

It was incredibly easy for me, but I know it was hard for some of my friends. It also helped need lose the weight and then some. I didn't pump with DS but I'll have to with DD. I'm going to try to pump every couple of hours.
  • Thanks everyone _ there giving me 6 weeks off work but I thought pumping would be better for her so I don't have to switch her after she got comfortable with me breast feeding
  • I'm a lactation consultant/nurse and I would recommend breastfeeding at first, even if you don't plan to continue at the breast. It can be hard, but it's way easier than pumping and your milk supply will be better when you do start pumping. Lots of women have huge issues getting milk out of the breast with a pump yet can feed the baby at the breast with no issues - I was one of them with my first.
There is no way to predict how breastfeeding will go for anyone before birth but please give it a try.
