Did my water break? Should I go to the hospital?

I'm 37 weeks and 4 days.. I've had pain on my lower back since I woke up & a pressure down there that makes it painful to walk.. But no big contractions or anything like that.. Also I like its getting a little wetter down there than usual.. I mean we all know we have a lot of discharge while pregnant but it feels like it's more than usual today and it runs down my leg sometimes but I don't think it's enough to say my water broke.. Am not sure if I'm in labor yet.. when should I go to the hospital??

Some women have a slow leak when their water breaks. It's not always a gush. If you're concerned I would call your doctor.

  • It sounds like you are starting labor to me!

  • Mine did that then an hour later it broke wide open! I'd say go in !

  • When mine broke, I called the hospital - labor and delivery - and they told me to put on an overnight maxi pad. Walk around for 20 min. If the pad is soaked through, come to the hospital and they'll check it out.
  • It won't always gush. Your baby's head is in the way so it will slow leak. Sit down and then stand up to see if you continue to leak a bit.
    Best of luck!
  • You are paying your dr & insurance for a reason & it never hurts to get checked out.

Not everyone is, I'm not and don't have the luxury of doing that, I only have a number for the l&d to call when a emergency happens, my midwife I can call Monday to Friday between 8am till 9am, luckily though I've not needed to or needed to ask a question here, would be nice to see that the op gets support not shot down

They say when you think your water is broken but only a slow leak to lay down for a few minutes and then stand up and see if you get another gush of fluid, sometimes the babies head can act like a cork ;)

Completely agree with this post. Call labour and delivery and they'll let you know if you should come in or not as all situations and symptoms mean something.

At around 36 weeks I woke up and had 2 cups of water come out of me and stopped. Being a FTM I panicked an called L&D and they informed me if it continued to wet a pad to come in but if not babies can hit/kick so hard that they can release pockets of fluid (apparently this is normal)!
