3D Ultrasound.. What's your thoughts ??

Hi everyone I'm a FTM and 16 + 2 weeks along.. My next scheduled ultrasound with my doctor isn't until the 26th and that's when we will find out the gender. I'm too anxious and excited to wait that long so decided to maybe just pay for the keepsake 3d ultrasound.. Any advice if it's safe to do so or should I just suck it up and wait till the 26th ?? Thanks in advance..

Re: 3D Ultrasound.. What's your thoughts ??

  • I paid for an ultrasound this past week at 16w2d to find out sex and am so happy I did!! We were going to have to wait 6 more weeks though! They did 2D not 3D and said that's because 2D is more accurate in determining sex.

The FDA warns against it.  https://www.fda.gov/downloads/ForConsumers/ConsumerUpdates/UCM095602.pdf

We considered not doing any.  It does not seem worth it to expose baby just to know a little bit sooner, especially when the FDA is explicitly warning against it.  No judgement, just sharing because you asked. :)
We won't be doing any 3d/boutique/keepsake ultrasounds for just this reason. I'm also in the no judgment camp. We just feel we'd rather not risk the baby's health for one more picture or a bit of information a few weeks early, but I think it's up to each parent to decide what works best for them and their family.

Edit: we are doing the regular screening ultrasounds as recommended by our doctor, we just aren't adding anything extra or the 3d.
  • Where I'm from they only do 1 ultrasound at 20 weeks, unless you don't know when your LMP was or if you have bleeding/cramping or other complications, they also don't tell us the sex of the baby regardless if they are 100% sure or not. All of our ultrasounds and health care is free, but we will be going to UCbaby and having a 3D/4D ultrasound to determine the sex of the baby may 16th !
  • Same as many have said above. I'm sure it's just a very small risk but my doctor doesn't recommend getting many ultrasounds. In Oregon these "boutique" ultrasound places were actually outlawed because of potential risk to baby. I'm also in the non-idgemntal camp, but I personally wouldn't do one. But I'm also abstaining from all caffeine (I had about one iced tea this whole time and some chocolate once in a while haha) so I'm on the conservative side with all that stuff. I just figure I can suck it up for a few more months (good without any caffeine, alcohol, certain cheeses, etc) so I don't have to worry about more stuff than I already do ;)
  • I did a keepsake one but my only one and it was done by a sonographer who does all the real stuff so it's not a waste. The only other place i could have gone is awful and the lady hurt my stomach the last time. I'd not do multiple ultrasounds unless i needed them because its not necessary and it's annoying to the baby. Even with this one after about 30 minutes the baby started grimacing and covering his face and we called it quits. I will say it was an amazing experience and i loved seeing the baby.
  • We are considering having one but not until around 28 weeks. A few of my doctors have said that the baby won't have much fat in its little face before then so it's better to wait. So we will wait until then :)
  • I had one today at 15 weeks 1 day and it was such an amazing experience! It's a BOY! It took about 10 minutes for her to find his parts but after wiggling me around and having me cough it was clear we are having a boy! I definitely recommend going to one it was a great experience !!

I go on the 16th, I'll be 18w2d and I was told the baby would be tiny because he/she won't have much fat on them !

I had an ultrasound every 4 weeks when I was pregnant with my twins and they always did 3D for us for a bit, we also wants twice to an elective 3D ultrasound so that our older son could go and see his brothers. This time, I am only pregnant with one so I only get a couple, but we will pay again for the extra two 3D so that our boys can go and see the baby. We find out the gender in 12 days via ultrasound boutique :)

P.s. My boys turned out just fine with all those ultrasounds! ;)

It's not the amount of ultrasounds that are the concern with boutique ultrasounds. It's how, by whom, how long, etc.

Considering the fact that the AAP, FDA recommend against them, and some states are even outlawing them, I'll pass and have my US performed on an as needed basis, and not for funsies.
  • I had a 3D ultrasound done and it was soooo special I'm so glad my husband took me ! My doctor's office gives out coupons for these ultrasounds so if it was harmful to the baby I'm sure my doctor would have warned against it and they would not encourage patients to go. Also my doctor told me she has never seen a 3D ultrasound gender determination wrong :) (side note I do not trust the FDA's level of judgement there is plenty of things in our food they deem as "safe" and it is illegal in other countries) to each is own! If you feel comfortable going than I say go for it --- in my opinion it's totally worth it :) the ladies at the boutique I went to said the best time to see what your baby will look like it 28-32 weeks :)

Here is a photo from our ultrasound :

I had the same concern about elective sonograms but my doctor said it is fine. I will only have two by her as long as my pregnancy continues without complications. We live three hours from our family so we are taking them to a boutique to see the baby. It actually is part of my mom's Mother's Day present:)
  • I have an ultrasound at every appointment, because I'm having twins. It's policy at my OB's office. I'm not concerned about the regular ultrasounds, especially since they are usually quick!
  • My doctor's office offers a 3D ultrasound for an additional cost but recommends waiting until 3rd trimester for the best results. I trust the sonographers at my OB's office and wouldn't pay an outside company for it.

We probably won't get one, though. Hubby thinks the 3D pics look weird anyway :)
  • My MFM doctor was speaking at a high-risk ultrasound conference in our city last weekend and asked me plus 5 other high-risk expectant moms to "model" so they could demonstrate different ultrasound techniques. So technically it was elective. In total I laid there 2 separate times for about 45 minutes each. I trust my doctor completely, he is well known in the field...I don't think he would have asked us to take part if would be any risk to our babies, especially since we are all considered high risk. I think the key, just like anything, is moderation. If you're going to get an elective ultrasound, just get one at a well-known place, not 2 or 10 or 12.

I feel the same about the FDA as some of the posters above. Just because they are the FDA doesn't mean they are right. I trust my doctor before I trust the government to tell me what to do with my body or my child.
