Ever witnessed a birth?

Since we have been on the topic of who will be present in the delivery room when we deliver I was wondering how many of you have experienced a birth from the other end, maybe a sister or friend? What was your experience in comparison to your personal experience having your own child? I have been present for the birth of both my niece and nephew and it was by far one of the most amazing things I have ever witnessed. I honestly was far more emotional watching my sister have her two children then when I had my son. Seems strange to say but the perspective was so different as I could see everything that was going on, I wasn't the one dealing with the pain, etc. and it really is such a miracle! I appreciate my body so much more than I ever did before and I'm so thankful  have been blessed to conceive and carry my own children. Women are amazing point blank!

  • I was in the delivery room with my best friend ! She was 3 cms when we got there, we walked for an hour and then the nurse checked her and she was 7 cms ! It was too late to get the epidural (where I'm from unless you get it around 4.5-6 cms they won't allow it) within 10 mins my friend says the babys coming, the nurse says oh no I just checked you and sure enough the baby was crowning !!! She had a very fast labor with her second baby girl !! It was deffinately an amazing expierence and I'm glad I was able to watch it !!

  • I have seen both a natural birth and a C section, both with my nieces.  Both of them were amazing...but I remember the pain my sister went through with the c section and it scares me due to I have been told I may be having a C section.  I was so happy to be there for both.
  • Only in nursing school.  I watched a c-section and it's so traumatic.  They pulled that baby out by the legs!  And the doctor broke the water and it splashed all over him.  Not something I would choose to watch again!  Don't remember much else about it though.
  • I was with my sister when she had her oldest son. I was 19 and was pretty traumatized. I'd much rather be on this side of things!
  • I'm a FTM, so I've never given birth. I was present during the births of all three of my siblings. I was 12, 13 and 24. My mother and I have a very special bond and it was a beautiful amazing and eye opening experience, it was also free birth control being as young as I was the first two times.

I have seen both a vaginal and c-section birth in nursing school. I don't recall the c-section being as bad as @aprosch described. I'm sure like anything, it's situation and doctor dependent.

  • I've seen about a billion! It is amazing and beautiful! And messy! I wish you all kind and smart OB nurses. They make the birth!!

The c-section birth described above is NOT the normal scenario (except maybe the amniotic fluid- that can happen with any birth) so don't be scared!!
  • Sorry, not trying to scare anyone, just stating what I remember.  I'm sure it's not really as bad as I remember it.  Being on the other end, the one actually giving birth, I'm sure it will be a whole new experience and I will have a much better perspective of it.

I'm sorry you saw such a terrible example. Nursing school will do that for you! I saw some terrible stuff too!!
  • @StephN310 Yeah, nursing school was so crazy.  Overloaded on all of this information and to see some crazy stuff.  I'm sure if I saw a birth now I wouldn't be phased by it at all!  Perception is everything!  After knowing all I know and being a nurse for 5 years, it will be a much different experience!
  • I was so honored to see my friend's birth two months ago! I was there through her labor and saw the delivery (vaginal).  I don't think I will ever forget it.  I feel a special bond to that little one!

The crazy part was the placenta! I was shocked by how quickly everything happened once the doctor showed up and started the delivery.  I'm really glad I saw a birth before I give birth!
  • I was there for one of my bff's delivery. She was induced and asked if I would be there. One of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. I even got to cut the cord. My best friend passed away almost 8 years ago (nothing related to child birth) and I cherish those memories dearly. Rip Sarah kyle <3
  • I am a labor and delivery nurse so I see births a few times a week :) my own two kiddos were csections. First was emergency and my second my daughter was breech. Debating on VBA2C or just schedule a section for this baby. I think either way a baby is born is a beautiful thing!
