Cloth diapering mamas, come in!!

How is your stash looking? Do you feel like you have enough/are ready? What are you most excited to use? Is anyone planning on CDing from birth?

I started with DS at 8 days old, and this time around I'm going to bring our cloth to the hospital. I am SO excited!

I stopped buying diapers about 3 weeks ago. I've got a collection of prefolds (Green Mountain Diapers), workhorse fitteds (also GMDs), Swaddlebees Simplex Newborn AIOs, and a few NB pockets.

This time around we're going to try using a hanging wet/dry bag for dirties instead of a pail and liner like we did for DS. I really hope it works!

Re: Cloth diapering mamas, come in!!

  • We will be cloth diapering starting in the hospital. We're using a local diaper service so I've been collecting diaper covers and snappis. Waiting for after the shower to buy anything else just in case - I have some friends who are hard core cloth diaper enthusiasts that I'm sure will supply me with some stuff.

Hey there! FTM and first time cloth diaper-er. We're not going to start from birth since I made the diapers I ran out of steam to make new born size. We also don't have any diaper services around (we live an hour from the nearest town over 5k people) so we will have a diaper bag. A friend gave us a hose attachment for the toilet. We'll see how it goes, wish us luck!

We have a collection so far of os pockets and aio's, mainly fuzzibunz, rumparooz, and blueberry. Also planning on trying some bg and a random assortment of others. For newborn, I already have some gdiapers to try and will get some gmd prefolds and workhorses. Haven't finished researching covers yet though. Wanna try a little of everything to see what we like.
  • This is baby #3 in diapers so we are good on diapers. We will not be cloth diaper in the hospital since we will only be there 24hrs and well I don't want to wash out meconium.

Our stash is primarily THX newborns, sunbaby and alvas. We will be cloth diapering up until our move and once we have a house in Korea. I am not cloth diapering in the hotel.

  • I think I have enough for the newborn stage. So far have 24 GMD newborn prefolds, 12 small GMD prefolds, 10 covers, 3 imagine NB aios and 2 newborn simplex. Ha I think I'm set for newborn.
I will start cloth after the meconium. I know its not bad but DH is grossed out by it ha.
For OS I have a few covers so far, 10 fuzzibunz, 1 glowbug pocket, and 4 rar pockets.

I'm excited to cloth this newborn :)

  • I have a stash of around 50 pocket cloth diapers and a handful of AIOs. A friend who cloth diapers suggested using Honest Company disposables for the first week or so, then switching. Excited! I think we have enough o where we'll just need to wash once a week or so, though might more often if they get stinky in the wet bag :P
  • I'm still doing the research on what's the best. The last three wore cotton prefolds with rubber pants over them. That was also nine years ago. Cloth diapering has evolved since then.
  • Bum genius! We'll start after the newborn size.
  • Totally doing cloth as well! We have about 30 NB prefolds, 6 NB rumparooz covers, 8 OS flip covers and an assortment of OS pocket diapers. I still would like to get about 6 NB AIOs for easier nighttime changes and about 8 AIO OSs for the same reason. We still have to get bigger prefolds to fit in the OS diaper covers. My only sad concern is that the daycare we're using told me today that they dont allow cloth diapers. Luckily we only need to go 2-3days/week for 8 hr days, which isn't soooo bad.
  • Wow! amazed at the stashes you all have already! I only have about 10 so far- All pockets, either Alvas or BumGenius! Shower is next weekend so I'm waiting until after that to get more.

We are not starting for a few weeks. I don't want to bother with a stash of just NB and I'd like to gradually work into it :)

Definitely interested in keeping this group going!

@stintzijd - check your state laws- most states cannot refuse CD I found, but that may ask for a doctor's note to do it... when we met our pediatrician she said she'd absolutely write a note on our behalf allowing it! I think they only thing they can refuse to do is clean them for you.

  • Cloth diapering here!  I have about 25 BumGenius that were given to me by a friend.  I also have one random one and two covers that my mom recently got for me.  I am also using cloth wipes.  Anyone else going down that route?  I have heard that it is slightly easier to have one place where everything goes.  I made my own with a nice organic cotton fabric that I purchased online.
  • We're doing cloth wipes, too. I go the simplest route: I buy packs of 5 or 6 baby washcloths at our dollar store and amassed like 50 of them. We keep some in the diaper bag and some with our diaper storage. I wet them with water as needed. We don't use wipe solution or anything. If we're going somewhere that I know won't have running water or I forget to bring water, we do have a pack of disposable WaterWipes that we can use in a pinch. It is SO much easier than having to throw poop wipes in the trash and the diaper in the pail, because I swear when we were using disposable wipes they ALWAYS wound up in the pail and laundry.

We have nothing in our stash yet. :( But we're going to a cloth diapering workshop at a diaper store near us in a few weeks and will figure out exactly what we need after that. My mom offered to help contribute to the initial investment, so I'm hoping the financial burden won't be too huge. But I'm excited to learn more about it, and thrilled that my husband is 100% on board. I hadn't necessarily expected that, but when we went in and just got an initial orientation, he was definitely into it.

Whoa I felt prepared until I read what ya'll have! I have 24 pocket diapers that adjust for size. Maybe I should get more? We plan on doing disposable in the hospital and for a little while after Violet's born if we need to. A friend of ours showed us their system and we plan on doing the same- it seemed to work wonderfully! We got the bamboo liners with flushable liners to go on top of those to help reduce the amount of poopy stuck to the liner, also they showed us how well their bumgenius toilet sprayer worked so we just got one as well! We are going to use flushable wipes as well so and that way it will only really be the liners in the diaper pail (i hope). I still need to figure out the best way to clean them in the washing machine, ive read all sorts of different ways!
  • You guys are so brave! I have about 9 so far--mostly covers, although I won a new BumGenius pocket, and two BumGenius AIOs at a recent convention. I have three covers I purchased from various sales online, and I have three newborn g diapers that I bought used because I just couldn't resist the cuteness. We're not planning on CDing while he's a newborn, but I am glad we'll have those three in case we hate disposables.

I've been holding off buying too many diapers for now because I want to see what kind of proportions we're working with. I do think we'll go the AI2 route because I love the idea of reusing covers with new inserts.

  • So I have primarily been looking at the pre-fold option with diaper covers. However, my friend recently had a baby and is trying to get me to look at AIO and Pockets. These don't make sense to me though because as soon as one of these diapers is soiled you need to change out the whole thing. At least with pre-folds (unless the diaper cover is soaked or soiled) you just need to change out the cloth part and put the same cover back on.

Can someone please try to convince me why AIO and Pockets are so much better?
  • Each diaper has its pros and cons. I have mostly prefolds and covers. They cost less and dry faster than aios.
I do have some pockets and aios. They will be nice for the middle of the night changes and also for when baby fights diaper changes. And for babysitters who would be scared by prefolds. Also pockets and aios can be stay dry if that bothers baby to feel wet. But you can add a fleece liner on top of a prefold for that. Hth :)

Honestly there is no "better", people have their preference. You might find you hate prefolds but live pockets. It's all trial an error and what you prefer. Out of everything I own AIO and pockets are my preference.

  • I know a lot of people who prefer AIOs and pockets due to "ease of use." Meaning there's no folding, pinning (or snappi), etc., it's all one piece, etc. Pockets and AIOs seem most like "regular" diapers.

I have 32 prefolds, simply because they are a cheaper outlay and dry quicker. I figure I'll be washing daily anyway so will stick with that amount until (or if) I find that I need more. My husband has already said the while he's proud of me for wanting to go the CD route, he's not comfortable using them and wants to use disposables. I might be able to convince him to use CDs after a few lessons! I think it's the unknown for him.

So nice to hear so many people using CD. I don't think I know a single person my age that has chosen that route. :)
  • Be cautious even with 'biodegradable, flushable' wipes and liners - there was a consumer study here about how badly they plugged up your septic/sewer systems despite being touted as safe to flush.  I just have a roll of t.p. on hand if there's anything disastrous the wet wash clothes can't deal with to start, and with a diaper sprayer, you really don't need a liner too.

I also made my own butt spray for lo, from wellnessmama.com for cleanup.
  • We used prefolds with covers for DD and I hated it. They didn't stay on her well and we had lots of issues with leaking. This time I have only pockets and aio. I have 33 so far most of which are one size. I'm not gonna lie, I'm addicted to his fluffy butt!!!

This is REALLY great advice!  The last thing folks need with a newborn is a clogged up septic system!  I have heard this warning before!  Yikes!
  • I've had three people scoff at me and tell me that there's no way we'll stick with cloth diapering (to my face--I'm sure there are more thinking it), even though DH is on board. Anyone else facing doubters?

I didn't CD my daughter, but I used cloth with my son. I got a lot of doubters, and then even critics when we were using them, but you know what? We CDed him until he potty trained 2 weeks shy of his 3rd birthday.

I have too... actually my husbands the most pro- CD one. I said I'd try it. Luckily I have one good friend who is a CD Queen so she's been holding our hands through this.

  • I had one of dhs coworkers say when I was tired of them that they would make great burp rags. I think most people don't realize how modern they are. And how easy they are to use. I'm excited and determined to prove everyone wrong. Lol

I am having twins and have gotten so much negative feedback about CD. We r going to use disposable until they can fit in an one size pocket/cover. I just say we'll it is a good thing u don't have to worry about it since they are my babies! When did women/mamas get so hateful to other mama's on their choices??

  • I think parenting feels totally overwhelming for a lot of folks and cloth diapering seems like more work. But I kinda think it is all about what becomes your norm. I do admire you, @LAO12! I'm kinda nervous preparing to do it for one baby! I think you're gonna rock it!

Right there with you. Besides my husband and my parents, no one has any faith in us. Any time I share that we're going the CD route, I get awkward silence and avoidance or flat-out "You'll change your mind after the first week."

I just don't understand it. Don't people realize that disposables weren't even a popular choice until the mid-80's? It's not a barbaric or especially difficult thing...
  • I am hearing good things about these diapers!  May be something worth checking out.  https://www.greenmountaindiapers.com/workhorse.html

These are the diapers I am going to pair with Thirsties Duo Wraps - with the Aplix closures/"Velcro." I've also read really great things!
