Hips lock up -kind of a rant

edited May 2015 in September 2015 Moms
i feel like I'm 100 years old! haha my hips and pelvis hurt all the time. I am in a no win situation. If I choose to relax for a day and take it easy, the lack of movement makes my hips and lower back get stiff. But I was deep cleaning the house yesterday and can barely walk today from ligament pain and bending over.

Re: Hips lock up -kind of a rant

  • Is it just ligament pain or could it also be symphysis pubis dysfunction? Mine started at 14 weeks (I have a joint disorder) and it can be pretty terrible, and sounds a lot like what you're going through. Have you tried a maternity belt? It helps distribute the weight and gives your hips and back some support. Hang in there, mama

Your lower back, pelvis and hips are all shifting. A pillow between your knees at night can be really helpful.

Instead of bending over try squatting down. That will help your back. Give yourself some rest the next couple days. I get terrible hip pain to the point I can't walk if I overdo it. It sucks but remember this is temporary.

  • @PickledPlums I thought about getting some sort of support belt or shirt to wear but I don't know anything about them. Do you have a brand you like?
  • Chiropractor is the best solution I've found. I got to find time to go see mine haha also supportive shoes.
  • I am feeling ya'! Been on a cleaning kick the last few weekends but this darn hip and back pain makes it impossible to last long or I really pay for it when I stop. I almost prefer to work thru the pain because if I take a break and lay down its almost impossible to get back up!
  • I have the same problem. This is the belt that was recommended to me by my physical therapist. It's really helped stabilize my hips and pelvic region when the pain is unbearable and I can't seem to find anything to help.

  • My dad is a physical therapist (man, it's amazing).

He's not keen on the belt because he prefers I strengthen my entire body instead. There are times to use the belt, but I don't know those times. I get the sense it's like a crutch. Use when recommended, but do all else before that.

Also, he says walking is the best thing I can do. The best. Uses a very wide range of muscles, strengthens, stretches...walking walking walking walking.

    And I still don't walk :-<
  • Mine is a Braaco, I got it for $20-ish on Amazon.

@barrelocarol the belt is really more for helping lift the bump when it gets really heavy, toward the end of pregnancy. By doing so it gets some pressure off the lower spine but not much. I had a belt and hated it: itchy, cumbersome and HOT. Plus you could totally see it through my clothes. I just started holding my bump when walking instead lol.

  • Stretching helps me a lot. Plie squats and pelvic tilts are my favorite.
