I've got a strange odor down there that's gross to me and I called my OB worried about infection. The nurse called back and said the doctor thinks it's just the smell of blood and mucus and to watch out for fever and uterine cramping.

Knock on wood, neither of those, but my bleeding seems heavier than it had been a few days ago and my vagina is throbbing. I don't want to call back unless this sounds unusual. Does it sound typical?

Another post was talking about bright red bleeding being bad. I have that, too. ???

If this sounds normal, how long does it last?

  • I hated that smell of post birth. Oh my goodness it's gross. My husband and I were just talking about it the other day. Def not looking forward to that. Best safe than sorry so keep in touch with dr about it. bright red blood is what I dealt with too though. U are probably fine though. :)

  • Sounds a little suspicious, especially bright red and increased bleeding. If it were me, I'd get it checked out. As for the smell, I only recall a fleshy, bloody type smell from my nethers with my first. Certainly not pleasant, but I wasn't too bothered by it. Maybe I will this time?
  • I'd push to be seen. It's possible you have part of your placenta still attached.
  • I am dealing with red blood. Its normal and will eventually change with time to a brownish color within 2-6 weeks. The bleeding should not increase though, it means you are doing too much. Put your feet up and relax. And yes the smell is afterbirth smell-- a fleshy blood smell.. Certainly not pleasant.

Do you have stitches? I know with my first it took a while for mine to dissolve (although I had a lot) but when I went in it was pretty much from them. I would imagine they can get kinda funky and maybe even pull/hurt if they don't desolve correctly. I don't know....just a thought. But I would go in and get checked out anyway

I feel so stressed out. My OBs office is closed, and before they closed the nurse told me that it sounds like an infection. ???
(Based on the smell as well as a clot I passed this morning and increasing pain in my vagina like my vagina is aching- but again, I wasn't seen by anyone.) They're supposed to call in a prescription but it's yet to come through. In the meantime I'm scared to death I'll hemorrhage or something serious over the weekend. How do they know what it is without seeing me?
  • Can you go into an urgent care or other walk-in clinic, or emergency room?
  • I suppose so, but with no family and the driving restriction it's hard to know how to handle arrangements for the baby.  I don't want her in any of those places. :/  I'm contemplating having my husband drop me off and taking the baby home.

I'm just so royally f-ing pissed because I called earlier this week about this and was brushed off.  And now if I have to go to the ER I won't be seeing someone who specializes in this.
  • I would call LD, they'll want you to come up there to be checked out and they'll probably bring you a bassinet to keep the baby in while you're being checked out.
  • I would see a dr...increased bleeding and pain seems like something to be checked out.
  • Definitely go back to L&D with your little one
