Claritin

These allergies are brutal! Does anyone take claritin for theirs? I took one last night finally after suffering for days. I am sort of worried about taking ANY meds but I finally caved.

Re: Claritin

  • It's in the safe list of meds that my doctor gave me, but I'm still trying to avoid at all costs.

Talk to your doctor, your situation might be different! Your doctor is the only one who knows you and your situation so I highly recommend that be the person you take advice from...not internet users!

  • Claritin is also on my Drs safe list.

This is a screen shot from my drug guide (for professional use and updated continuously) on the safety of Claritin. I am a Women's Health NP so this isn't just an Internet search.

Call your clinic if you are still having concerns or doubts!
  • Yes it is on my safe list...but I wanted to hear from users who have taken it and outcomes.

They also have ibuprofen before 20 weeks but I'd avoid that at all cost being a category c.
  • I've taken it. Still a nice strong heartbeat in there.
  • I've been taking it. My doctor said the allergy symptoms would only get worse as the pregnancy goes on.

I've been taking it this week and it's been making a huge difference. It's on my Drs safe list too. I haven't had any side effects, and baby has a strong heart beat in there!

  • I try to only take as needed. But this past week has been the worse, so I've taken it once a day.

I wish I could take something stronger because this just isn't cutting it for me. My seasonal allergies have always been pretty sever though :(
  • The pollen this year is so high here where I live...let's pray it eases up for us and our babies soon!

I'm having the same issues. My doctor said I could take Claritin or Zyrtec. Went to the pharmacy and the pharmacist suggested I take Zyrtec over Claritin. Zyrtec is a category B drug while Claritin is a category C drug.
  • My list says that Claritin is safe.  I think I just saw to stay away from Claritin D?

  • Claritin is actually category B I do believe
  • I take it. Both my OBs said it was fine.

I broke down and took a Claritin last night and was finally able to sleep. I only took it because my doctor had it listed as a B. This morning it seems to be breaking up more then it has all week. I plan to only take if absolutely necessary.
  • Claritin is category B.
  • I think the FDA is moving away from the current categories, and is going to start just providing summaries on each commercially available drug that include a section on safety during pregnancy.  In any case, I take it daily.  I took it with my first, and had no problems.  I'm even taking singulair this year, which is category C, which makes me really uneasy.  But sometimes the symptoms are tougher on you and baby than any potential (minimal) risks from taking the meds.  So definitely ask your doctor's advice, and do what you're comfortable with!

Yeah I just looked it up myself and says Claritin is category B. I'm not sure why the pharmacist told me it was category C. Sorry for giving incorrect info!!!!
