Any advice on how to get baby to take the bottle!

Im currently retuning to work and I pump so my baby can stay on breast milk, but he hates the bottle and will take it once he's hungry enough but is there anything else to help him enjoy is bottle better, or any nipple/bottle suggestions ? He gets the bottle once even on the days I don't work so he doesn't have such a hard time the day I return to work, but it breaks my heart to hear he's getting so upset. I'm a FTM and can use any helpful hints or anything!!! I also plan on asking my lactation specialist for any suggestions.

  • Cute picture!

We are currently trying to introduce the bottle as well. I'm using the Tommee Tippee bottles and she seems to like them so far. I do find that dad has to be the one to feed, not me (she knows I've got the good stuff!) I would suggest that you try different bottles/ nipples to see if maybe he just doesn't like the ones your currently have.

If you're not currently pumping when LO gets his bottle, make sure to do so. If you don't pump in place of when he would actually be breastfeeding, you may reduce your supply. I'm pumping and using that milk right away for a bottle. I'm saving the freezer stash for emergencies (ie spilt milk or I start to produce less).

Have you tried out different types of bottles? He may not like the ones you have. I've only given my LO a bottle about 5 times bc I'm a teacher and I'm off until next fall so I try to breastfeed her whenever possible. She has taken the Tommee Tippee bottles very well though.

My SIL had to try about 3 different bottle brands with her LO before she found one that her daughter would take. I've heard Dr. Browns are good too.

  • I pump occasionally so dad can feed her. I've found that feeding her before she's super hungry helps and she won't refuse the bottle. The first few feeds I did myself so she wasn't too confused.
  • I'm returning to work at the end of the month. I use Avent Natural bottles with the size 0 nipples (they come with Size 1, but it's still faster than my LO can handle). My husband does better than I do. We try not to wait until she's too hungry because it does not work well if she's so hungry she's crying. I also notice that she does much better if we really warm the milk up well rather than just taking the chill off (I use a 2 cup measuring cup and my electric kettle rather than a bottle warmer). We try to feed her a bottle every day, usually when I'm busy cooking. I also make sure to pump in the morning and before bed, whether she takes a bottle or not, so I produce an extra 5-10 oz per day. This is what works for us; hope you figure out what works for you!

Thanks for the advice, I got the pumping down, and I have the playtex variety of nipples plus avent slow flow and dr Browns, thanks to my wonderful baby shower hostess! So far still not the biggest fan of the bottle but getting better! He just would pever boob to bottle but I can't be a stay at home mom as much as I'd love too:( just hate hearing it takes hour to hour later to get him to take it :( but hopefully we'll get it sorted soon!!!
