Any teachers out there?

I just need to vent for a hot second- I started maternity leave (from high school science- chemistry, physics, and forensics) and my long term sub IS SO TERRIBLE. Not only is this annoying because I have been pregnant all school year with an ending date they have known since probably Christmas break and they spent WAY more time looking for a freaking football coach and waited to find my sub till 2days before I was supposed to leave (yes I asked many times). First, he claims he is super smart and taught college- cannot possibly be true. He knows nothing! My students are so confused and I receive emails and he is not even talking about the topic they are on! They were supposed to be talking about autopsies in forensics and he started talking to them about sex....really??? A) Not Related B) YOUR OVER 60! STOP FREAKING THEM OUT. Then today he gave my Physics students the test I created as their review and just wants to take that and grade it- what? open note and open classmate? NO!! I spend all my time creating things and having to send exactly how to do every problem then meeting with students on google documents to teach them how to do it because he can't. I AM SO ANNOYED. Seriously...the end of the year cannot come soon enough- I feel like the worst teacher ever who just left my kids in the dust. I am 1 of the very few teachers in the school who actually challenges them but at the same time makes it enjoyable (so they kids say). I want them prepared for the real world- not the world of lets work freaking fast food forever as our goal (not saying there is anything wrong with that- no need to freak- but if you are in Physics and doing well you can do much more if you decide). Vomit. I hate subs who actually know nothing and don't even seem to try....THANKS SCHOOL FOR PICKING A REAL WINNER

Re: Any teachers out there?

  • This is why I'm taking it upon myself to hunt for someone that will actually make them work the last four weeks. Are you going back soon or no? I hate crappy subs.

No my kids end May 22nd. Im due the 10th but Im thinking she will go over that. So they are ending the year with this idiot. Super depressing....Darn blood pressure pushed me out a week before I was planning
  • That is super frustrating. I'm not a teacher so I can't empathize in the same way. But my job also chose not to post my position until way too late. We have a year maternity leave (Canada) and so I want someone strong while I'm away. I felt awful leaving my clients not knowing who was going to replace me. I was on vacation for 2 weeks before officially starting my mat leave this week. So I'm in my third week off already and I spoke to a coworker today. She said they haven't even screened the applications for my job yet, let alone call anyone for interviews!!! At this rate they won't have someone in the job at LEAST until June...why did I bother telling them I was pregnant in October???
  • I am so sorry, I feel your pain. My sub is not bad but not great. Sounds like you have a mess of a sub, any chance of getting a replacement? I teach 3rd grade and have made it clear to my sub that if my teaching style is not what she wants to do to modify. She emails me every day to ask if it's ok to change little things. I keep telling her to do what works for her. She is trying hard, but won't just take over. As long as she stays on curriculum and competes the year long plan I have I am good. I keep telling her that there are multiple ways to get the end result. :(. Oh well, almost over!!
  • This is why I found my own sub because i was absolutely terrified of this. I'm sorry that your faced with this. I would be calling my administrator and letting he/she know that this sub is not doing what is asked. Especially when you go through all the effort to prep the final weeks of the year.
tomorrow is my last day and I've been pushing myself so hard to get everything ready and to prep the kiddos. I would be beyond angry if the sub came in and just did whatever. Finding subs that are capable Shouldn't be as hard as it is.
  • I was student teaching from januar until kast week and now am on maternity leave. I teach preschool and my sub since January is my sister in law so it is,very hard to say anything about how she is doing. I am so nervous about my guys being ready for kinder. in the fall. Not the same as high school physics but I understand bit oof your frustration
  • Unfortunate, but let it go.  It's two weeks left, and it's not going to ruin their lives/careers, whereas stressing yourself and baby out can have worse effects.  I've left things as ready as I can for my kids, and that's all we can really do.  Let your administrator explain why they hired a dummy to parents if they complain.

My school ends end of June and today is my last day and my sub is... Well going to be not fab too. Here's to hoping what we did with them the first 8 months carries over more strongly than the last 2. Enjoy that baby

My student just emailed me too saying the class isn't learning anything. I teach English and the sub is a Math teacher.... huh?!? Schools really are the worst run organizations.

    Amen!!!!
  • Same exact situation! Could have written this post myself. I am in my happy place though and letting it go!
  • Atleast there are subs in your rooms. Today is my first day of leave. I teach special Ed and have a student with autism who nobody else will deal with....but no sub. My aid is in there while she can but she will be out a bunch for her own reasons. It's hard to care so much, but at the same time atleast I won't be there to clean up the mess they are making.
  • My last day was Friday and my classes still don't have a long term sub :( they are hopefully getting one in on Monday. I'm so stressed about my students too. Can't wait for this little guy to come do my brain focuses on something else.

Ugh! Super annoying that this is happening to so many! You would think education was not important! I mean I know that a sub is not you so automatically things are different but it seems as though schools take the easy way out :( So sad. I hope my child never gets a long term sub!

I had to go out unexpectedly at 33 weeks. I'm 38 now. Fortunately, I landed a great sub because she retired from my team last year. I stressed about my sub for a long time until I landed her so I get it. It's sad to think your kids are getting a bad sub when you've put in so much hard work with them. At least that's what I kept thinking, but at least it's the very end! In our district we have to find our own subs. I like that because I get to "interview" them. My assistant begged me to get this one lady. She came in and literally sat there and chatted with my assistant the whole time and did nothing with the kids. YEAH RIGHT! I told her that next time she goes in for a long term position she may want to actually do some work while the teacher is still there! Dodged a bullet with that one!
  • I'm a kindergarten teacher and I was lucky enough to get a long term sub that has subbed for me several times consistently during this pregnancy when I would have to go to the "baby doctor" as my Kinders would say. She was a student teacher on our team last year and she has been wonderful. Now, we only have 2 weeks left and she has been there since Monday, so she will be with my kids 1 day shy of 3 weeks but she has texted me to keep me in the loop, ask my opinion on how I would handle certain situations and my kiddos are doing well! I was so worried to have to be out with a long term sub but I am grateful for this break before baby girl gets here (Due June 2nd, but will probably be here within the next week or 2). I'm so sorry for everyone who has had terrible subs!

This is hard for teachers to accept, but we need to realize our own children are more important than the ones you teach. High school students can deal with a bad teacher short term. I'm just glad this leads into summer so I don't have to go back to pick up pieces.

  • I'm lucky enough to have gotten to line up my own sub and one that my kids are familiar with, now I just have to deal with the desperate hope that my crazy administration doesn't try to pull him to cover "rough groups" when my kids behave! It's hard to turn off being a teacher, even when preparing for our own babies - we've been raising these kids all year! Good luck mama!

Try telling this to the parents. Some of them make it a war zone, but what can you do.

I totally get the parents issue. I had a parent be downright rude earlier this year when I was in the hospital because I want there to review with her kid for the test. Review. Not teach. But it's not your issue to deal with them right now. Admin and the sub. That's easier said than done. I know.
