  • I agree with PP you need to call CPS now.

This is definitely a CPS situation. You really should give them a call.
  • Trust me I've wanted to. I don't know the girl that well. She is a friend of a friend. My best friend hangs out with her pretty often. Told my friend she should call social services.

If you know her name and her address (I'm assuming you know where she lives since you know she and her bf smoke pot around their one year old and people usually only do this at their own home) you know enough to fill out a report. These people at the very least need counseling and perhaps help with their addictions.

Do you know their first and last name? If so Google them and I'm sure the address is somewhere on the Internet. Or they probably tag their home in pictures on facebook. There are plenty of ways to find out. Just do some digging!! It is worth it to save that one year old and the unborn baby!

Edit* couldn't you just ask your friend for their address?
  • What does your friend say about this? And why is she friends with someone who is drinking and smoking in front of their one year old and her unborn child???? If my friend was doing this she would no longer be my friend and CPS would be getting a call from me! Think of the children, please!

Don't want to be downer, but depending on what state you live in CPS can't do anything about the unborn child until it is born with drugs in its system. In my state (MD) they don't consider it a baby until after birth so there are no laws that permit law enforcement to arrest the women for mistreating a fetus. However, the baby can be taken away at birth if born with drugs in its system. Regardless, you should still call, if she has a one year old.
  • My doctor does have a policy they they will drug test if they feel the need to (showing signs of use). If you test positive they will no treat you. They also report you to CPS.
  • You should do the right thing and call the cops NOW!! Don't debate. Do the right thing.
  • First off, unless you have seen the parent physically do il drugs with the baby in there belly they won't do a thing. If you lie, you are held accountable and could have charges brought against you. There is nothing this girl can do. My husbands cousins are/were(who knows) heroin addicts. They lost three children to it. They proceeded on to have two more. They were clean for a couple years. They began using again and admitted to going through 9,000 in income taxes in less than a month in heroin. They started selling couches and other important items since they had two kids aged 1 and 3 at home. I couldn't sit and wait for those kids to die while they were doped out in heroin nor did the kids deserve to be there with them. I called and that's what I was told. It was heartbreaking to me. They eventually packed up literally clothes and the kids and left the state high on heroin with those kids. Don't know what why're doing know or where they are. Sooooo sad.

^^ This is true, I've called CPS 2 different instances. Once for a woman who I witnessed doing drugs and having them laying around in front of her 5 year old....nothing was done. Another time for a woman who was pregnant and smoking pot/drinking....once again, nothing was done past the "offer of counseling", most states will give a mother multiple chances to correct any issue before physically stepping in with authority. It's not as cut and dry as it seems, however if I see an instance of blatant child abuse as I did in those cases I did make the call anyway and I would do it again in a heartbeat.

Yet CPS can pick up kids just for walking home from the park! The system is so messed up.
  • It seriously is! She did however say every state was different. We are in Ilinois. They had there other kids taken away in Maryland & we were told there two completely different states and they couldn't even get the records if they tried. She said they basically start with a clean slate her in Illinois. Glad they didn't brutally beat hen or something!!! It was a serious blow for me. So basically they can totally mistreat those kids and get away with it......

Call CPS with whatever information you have. What this mother is doing is child abuse and in my opinion a bystander is just as guilty. They will set up services to help this mother get clean and parent.

You should definitely call. Even if they can't do anything with your specific call at least they will be able to keep it on record and if other calls come in then they can build a case.
  • A pot user is certainly an entirely different scenario than a heroin addictbut it is dispicable to be doing any of this while pregnant! The alcohol is probably the worst thing for that baby as it is the worst thing for adults ( speaking between pot and alcohol). This is all horrible behaviour for a pregnant woman! Its silly to debate whether anything can be done before even calling. Call and find out, at least then you know you have do me the right thing!

I second this. If you are aware of a harmful situation to the children you have to call.

My friend's brother and his GF lost custody of their child before it was even born for drug use. Every situation is different, so do not call just because you are worried nothing will be done.

  • People are going to hate on me but I have different feelings about CPS from my own experience (I'm adopted) I probably wouldn't call just because of how much CPS puts those children through. As for her being pregnant and doing such things I would be torn because that's unfair for her to do such things to the unborn child and I would feel guilty for just standing by but at the same time IF the child living with them is healthy and happy I wouldn't want to tear him/her away from his/her family. I do have different feelings towards cannabis though, and even though I would NEVER consume cannabis while pregnant, I would consume cannabis around my born child IF I were in a legal state. Thats the only reason why I won't after my child is born, because I am in an illegal state and I don't want even the slightest chance of my child being taken away from me. At some point though I do plan to move to a legal state and consume cannabis and raise my child to not really think twice about it just the same as I didn't think twice about my own parents having a glass of wine with dinner. Kind of like that article from scary mommy.com. Just my opinion from my own experience and working in a child care center where I see happy children getting torn away from their parents for cannabis use screaming for mommy and daddy as CPS is taking them to yet another visit with a strange family they don't know is really hard to see. But her having bad enough judgment to smoke while pregnant would give me all the information I'd need to call and tell someone in order to try to get her to stop before having to get CPS involved.
  • I do agree with the above comment in regards to weed around children. There are many ways to use it other than smoking it and a little buzz from a vaporizer is totally equivalent to a woman having a a glass of wine or two around her baby. Just my opinion.
  • In my state they wouldn't do anything for pot smoking. Now heroin is another story. You could at least try though.
  • They've just brought in a new law in Australia where women who are caught using drugs or alcohol while pregnant will be charged with child abuse and could receive jail time
  • Call CPS. As a social worker I am mandated to report as well as anyone who knows of neglect and abuse. If you fail to report and something happens to the 1 year old and this group post is public and they find out you knew you will be prosecuted.
