Protein in urine?

went to doc yesterday and she said she found a small trace of protein in my urine. Has anyone else had this or know the cause?

Re: Protein in urine?

  • Did you happen to ask your doctor what they thought was a cause? I would go with their answer over what anyone here would/could speculate.

  • I agree definitely ask your doctor.

That being said my understanding is those urine tests can generate a lot of false positives, my office actually stopped doing them routinely for that reason.  So I wouldn't start panicking, but obviously we can't give you any information as to what might be going on.
  • It usually means you have gestational hypertension or preeclampsia but one would assume your dr would have told you more if either of those were suspected!
  • It is not preeclampsia or hypertension. Traces mean nothing but if it's more than a trace it could be dehydration. Trace of protein without high blood pressure is not preeclampsia. You have to have both protein and high blood pressure. Ask your doctor bc we don't know your history and any answer would be speculation.

Typically the test is done to identify preeclapsia but it's not that simple. Usually a diagnosis is made when there are a collection of symptoms.

I imagine that with a trace amount they'll be more concerned about your results next time you go in. Consistent protein probably isn't good.

  • I get one of those tests every time I go in. One of them had a trace of protein. None of the docs seemed concerned. If its recurring then maybe. I was told that it can happen if your dehydrated or had an lot of protien recently. I wouldn't be concerned if your docs weren't.
  • I've had trace protein consistently since 20weeks and I'm 32 now. Doctors not concerned because my BP is good.
  • Thank you everyone. I did not see my normal doc this last appointment and this doc did not seem concerned at all. Still going to ask my regular doc next visit
  • Well, I have protein and blood in my urine all the time and they have done tests and could find nothing wrong. Could be nothing at all

As long as your blood pressure and weight gain are doing fine and it stays trace amount, then everything should be fine. I don't know what all the causes of it can be. I know personally for me with both pregnancies I had pre eclampsia and that was the cause of it. My bp slowly climbed, and my weight gain shot up as well. Just talk to your doctor and make sure they keep an we on you and keep you informed!!
