STM - how many of you... ?

How many of you second time moms went back to work at the 6 to 12 week mark and were successful with pumping? I stayed home with my son for 2 years and breastfed exclusively. Now, I have to go back to work when this baby will be 3 months. I really want the baby to be breast fed again... Any advice appreciated...

  • I went back at exactly 2 months. Pumped at work and nursed her most times I was around. Daddy did bottles too. I nursed her for a year and stopped due to being overwhelmed with student teaching and not being able to pump anymore. Totally doable. Just keep your pumping schedule and I pumped at home too after I was done nursing her.

  • Oh I would also start pumping soon after baby comes not just when you go back. If you nurse for the first month or two then introduce a bottle it will take LO a little to adjust. My mom gasp naive her the bottle (DH was stationed in the army)
  • I did and was successful for 6 months. It is stressful, but doable, and I will be doing it again. I would start pumping after about a month, just after each feeding getting whatever extra you can out. This will help u build a little supply. Then when you go back to work it is very important that you stay on a schedule. A hands free nursing bra was helpful too because I could work on my computer while I was pumping.
  • I did and we nursed for 15 months. I started pumping about 4 weeks after birth to build a stash and get my body accustomed to the pump. Starting giving a few bottles a week a couple weeks before going back to work.

It's a pain in the ass to pump, but definitely doable if you want to maintain a nursing relationship.
  • I went back at 12 weeks and pumped at least twice for 20-30 minutes during my 8.5 hour shift. It was grueling. I sat behind a shower curtain practically in a mop sink. I nursed my son til he was a year then I got pregnant and he weaned himself. It's the hardest thing I have ever done and I still plan on doing it again. Good luck. U can't stress too much about qty and it helps to have videos or FaceTime with your little one if u can. :) good luck

I went back at 6 weeks and still nurse my 2.5 year old along with my newborn! I started pumping when she was 3 weeks. just 1 time/day for 10 minutes AFTER nursing. Then the key was pumping 3 times/day at work. Even if i was busy. i made it a meeting in outlook for 30 mins 3 times a day. i worked thru lunch and breaks. it worked perfect.
