There are lots of articles on this on every baby website. The hospital will provide most essentials, so it's more about what will make you comfortable. If you wear contacts, definitely bring a case, solution and your glasses. Anything else is up to you.
Seriously though, I got started with a list I found online, crossing off the stuff that I don't think I will need and adding stuff I think I will. It's been on my fridge for like a month so I can add stuff to the list as it comes to me.
Seriously tho, I just got back from buying some hospital bag stuff. I'm not 100% on what my hospital will provide, so I did plan to bring a little stuff just in case, but also stuff I know I will need after. I got - Little empty travel containers for my own shampoo, conditioner, body wash - Little travel toothpaste and cheapie toothbrush - Burt's Bee's facial wipes (cucumber and sage, yum) - A small travel sample of noxema face wash (its not my brand, but it'll do for a day or 3) - Comfy cheap PJ pants, black so if I bleed on them it won't show - A cheap robe, also black, for wearing around the hospital - Some maxi pads (I'll throw a few in my go bag but those are more for the aftermath) - A tub of Tucks - I'm also going to pack some snacks (applesauce, candy bars, granola bars) for me and the hubs. - Phone charger
That's pretty much my bag. I also live 5 minutes from the hospital, so I'm not too concerned about not having something.
Instead of LED candles, I'm bringing glowsticks. We're gonna rave this baby
Just to be the fly in the soup, there was a HUGELY intensive discussion on this not too long ago, with a lot of people giving a lot of input (and a little bit of silliness) as to what they're bringing. If you search, you should be able to find it. But I'll bet a quick Google search will give you lots of useful lists and info as well!
All you need absolutely need are weather-appropriate outfits for you & baby to wear home (think comfort first) and a blanket for baby. You'll definitely want your own face wash, shampoo/conditioner, deodorant, and toothbrush/toothpaste. You're probably going to want snacks and drinks. You may want your own pads, nursing pads, and diapers in the brand you'll be using for baby. You might wish you had brought a little makeup if you decide not to.
Take it easy, think practicality, and make sure the car seat is properly installed. Everything else is unnecessary stress unless it makes you happy.
Op non of this is to poke fun at you. It's a lot of crazy junk that's been collected over the entirety of our bump journey together. I'm packing light.
-comfy clothes (no cute going home outfits for me) -house shoes (also to go home in) -a pillow -tooth brush and tooth paste -travel shampoo - body wash -hair ties -light makeup
-boppy -receiving blankets -sleepers -cute outfit for pics and going home -super man hat and socks
...something random that I forgot last time is the insert for the car seat. It's a double layered thingy. I'm not sure what it's called but it keeps the baby's head from moving in the car seat. They look so tiny the first time you put them in Eeee. I didn't even think to pack it last time.

We packed the little head thing but they wouldn't let us leave with it in...we had to remove it. But honestly, you could drive to the other side of the parking lot and put it in.

The reason they wouldn't let you have the head support is because you shouldn't use anything in a car seat that does not come with the car seat. All of the cute shoulder straps and head supports shouldn't be used. If a newborn needs head support in the car seat, the nurses should be able to show you how to roll receiving blankets and use them. Sorry to hijack the post, my husband is a car seat tech, so I know extras is a big no no.

Sorry if I'm being obtuse - if my car seat came with an infant insert, is that ok, or is that what you all are talking about?

Yup! As long as it came with it, it's totally fine to use.
Call labor and delivery and find out what they do and don't provide. During the tour of my OB unit, I found out all I need to bring is clothes for baby and I to go home in and shower shoes.

My bebe will be arriving in style, yo! Matching furry hoodies for us, unicorn pins, and a pacifier-- for me, not her.

I went through that as my starting point.
