Peppermint tea, good or bad?

I just read something that said to avoid peppermint tea because it relaxes the uterus and can cause a miscarriage, but I've had peppermint tea recommended to me by a doctor, to help relieve my nausea. Is it safe, or not?

Re: Peppermint tea, good or bad?

  • This is where I got it from.

  • It's fine in recreational doses. If you drink 3 cups per day you should be fine. It's medicinal tinctures that can cause complications.

  • Besides the glucola that you can substitute, know whatever your doctor recommends you can do. They have taken care of many pregnant women and have done the research. I trust that over Pinterest and Google search.
  • I had about 6 cups in between when I found out I was pg and about 7.5 weeks. It was helping my nausea and I did not realize there could be a risk. I have stopped drinking since then but dont feel worried about what I did drink.

  • Trust your doc. The best advice my ob gave me was to stay off the internet. She said especially when you're pregnant, the more you look up on the internet the more afraid you'll be to even walk out the door. I'm in TOTAL agreement. I mean, I like coming here for shared experiences and find some "tricks of the trade," if you will because it's nice to find people who have shared experiences because that adds a level of comfort. But if the internet says no and doctors that you TRUST (that part is KEY) say yes... I'm sorry but no competition, go with the doctors. They've worked with you personally, know your history and are keeping up with you. They're going to give you a much more accurate recommendation.
  • I love it, one cup a day w black strap molasses (iron n calcium).
  • My midwife recommended it as well. She's trained; the powers-that-be at Pinterest aren't. Just don't drink like, a gallon a day and don't worry about it.
  • The peppermint tea helped with my nausea too. Drink up!

But like PPs said, not a gallon.

I also just had a friend gift me Trader Joe's organic ginger pear tea, and it is delicious. Ginger can help nausea, and I found eating a ripe pear would also help relieve it for a solid 90 mins (I don't think pears are known for relieving nausea but it helped me). If peppermint makes you wary, perhaps try this as well?
