Still fighting unsafe baby gear

So, a few weeks ago I made a post about my aunt trying to give us unsafe baby gear, and my mom took up for me, and I was nice about declining any other offers for stuff. Now, she's given my mom a used car seat for her to keep in her car when my baby is with her.... Now I havnt seen it, but based on the condition of the stuff she's tried to give me previously I don't really trust any of it, espically a car seat because I know even if it wasn't in a crash, they can still be weakened by being left in the sun and other factors. Point of the matter is, I don't want my baby in it. I'm thinking I'll try to explain this to my mom but I don't want her to think I'm being dramatic. Ugh.

Also, on a silly note, DH had to shave my legs today because I can no longer reach my legs! LOL bless his heart.

  • Good way to deal with the car seat is the expiration date and maybe find a Car seat tech to help.

  • Yep. Check the expiration date on the car seat. I think the recommendation is to get rid of them 6 years after the manufacture date. If you can find the manufacture date or if it's not explicitly stamped with an expiration date, call the manufacturer.

Even if it's not expired I would still be wary about the possibility of it having been in an accident. The only way you to find that out is to talk to the seller directly, and trust that they are being honest with you.

  • Buy an extra base for your mom's car and just say "oh I got an extra one for free when I ordered mine, so you can keep this one in your car." I actually did get a free one when I bought my daughters off albeebaby.com.

the expiration date is usually on the bottom of it or on one of the stickers. I am one of those people who will not let my children be in a used car seat. You never know if they were involved in an accident, if they washed the straps, if any parts of it were recalled or if they put it on top of a shopping cart and damaged the locking clip. Just too many what ifs. If it's not expired and your still not comfortable with it but you don't want to sound ungrateful (because really it is nice that they want to do so much) I like PP suggestion of just buying her a base to keep in her car.

check out car seats for littles. They have a great website and facebook ground where you can find the best up to date information on car seat safety. It is a great tool to use when needing to show examples and explain why something is not safe. I have had to use it with my sister.

  • The thing is even if it's not expired you don't know the history. If it was left in extreme heat.. Was in an accident ect. I wouldn't chance it at all. And an infant seat can easily be used in multiple vehicles.. Your mom shouldn't need one of her own. Maybe just the base. ... I wouldn't chance it at all.

    I'm with you girl.
I will NOT put my children in any gear that has been used or is expired.
I care about my kid's life too much.

  • Thanks ladies... I'll try and find a base for her! I already have my car seat, so I'll be on the hunt for it! :)
  • Is your aunt a horder? If so maybe she can't help herself, they tend to see value in all kinds of junk.
  • If you have an infant bucket seat you don't even really need the extra base. Just show her how to install it with the seatbelt.

  • No I'm pretty sure this is her trying to clear out the basement of her buisness by pawning stuff off on me. She doesn't have kids and doesn't understand why the used stuff isn't always okay to use. And hummm I'm not sure what it is honestly! I got it as a part of a travel system. I think I'll go check it out! :) either way the infant car seats seem pretty easy to move from car to car.
  • My mother in law bought us a used car seat from a friend of hers and we simply and honestly let her know that we didn't trust it so we're letting her sell it in a yard sale this morning. No reason not to just be honest! This won't be the first time we'll have to stand up for our little one to family, might as well get used to it I guess haha.
