zero appetite!

I need help! I'm just past 18 weeks and my appetite is completely gone. 100% gone. Like Sunday all I had to eat was half a sandwich. Today I had a grilled cheese. I just can't bring myself to eat anything. Anyone else having this problem? If so what are you doing to eat?

Re: zero appetite!

  • I had this problem my whole first trimester, it went away for 2 weeks, and is now back with a vengance. I've just been forcing myself to eat. Unfortunately, yesterday I lost my lunch, and im pretty sure it was because I made myself eat even tho I wasn't hungry. I'm gonna ask the dr monday what to do to eat more food, or if it's ok to not eat when im not hungry.

  • I was on diclegis my first trimester because I stopped eating altogether. Then like you, I was fine for like 3 weeks .. now I'm not nauseous but I'm just not hungry. I feel full all the time. I'm forcing myself to eat too.. but that makes me nauseous. I have an appt. On fri. I'll ask my dr. Just hope he doesn't get me on med again.

Ask your doc about meal replacement shakes. During the first trimester they are what got me though. Orgain is the brand I like and you can order it from Amazon. It's a little pricey- unless it's all you are eating- in which case it's very cheap! It has a ton of vitamins including the nausea reducing B vitamin so for me they even helped reduce my nausea! I would drink one in the middle of the night after I got up to use the bathroom and it helped me not feel sick in the morning

I've had zero appetite this whole time! But I have to eat every couple hours or I get nauseous and a terrible headache. 17w4d and haven't had any relief whatsoever!
  • Nope! I pretty much want to eat everything in sight unfortunately. :)

I have had extreme nausea all through my first tri, up until probably a week a go (18 wks today) and no appetite. Still don't have an appetite, and have to force myself to just eat wee meals often, or on the rare occasion I feel like 3 big macs I'll eat 3 big macs haha(not really but you get what I mean! !) Perhaps loss of appetite is a normal pregnancy symptom!
  • It must be, because I'm not hungry. I make myself eat breakfast so I can take my prenatal without upsetting my tummy, then I'll force a small lunch, and then eat in front of my husband for dinner so he doesn't freak out. But truthfully, I'm not hungry. I'm not nauseated anymore (usually), just not hungry.

My meat aversion is still going strong too...and my husband is worried because all I want for dinner is bread and cheese.

Been doing high protein stuff other than meat like Morningstar veggie patties, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, etc.

Whatever...I'm not too worried. I'm not supposed to gain much weight since I'm already overweight so that helps me feel less guilty about not eating a lot.

Like a PP poster said, every now and then I'll crave a cheeseburger, but not often.

At 16w I've gained a total of 2 pounds. Meh.
  • Maybe the shakes will help! I'll look into that. I've gained a belly but lost 16 lbs now. Last night my husband bought me chick fil a to try to get me to eat and I had 2 nuggets and gave the rest to my dogs. The only way I can explain it is I feel really full all the time. Like I just went to a buffett.
  • I'm 19 wks today and still feeling like this. I've gained 3lbs and still no bump lol. I'll have a day here and there where all I want to do is eat but most of the time I just can't eat. I'll get hungry, make myself a meal then sit down and be completely full two bites later.

Shakes sound like a great idea though. And like some others said, I started off overweight so not gaining has been a plus but I know it's not great to not eat much. Hopefully we all find some relief and solutions soon!!
  • 19 weeks today and still down 8 lbs from when we found out at 4 weeks.  I have a very big (for 5 months) bump but no appetite what so ever.  my doc said not to worry and when I told her I was trying to force myself to eat but that was making me throw up she told me to stop and not to worry that baby is good.  I eat here and there but I don't want anything, nothing sounds good, and I have completely forgotten what being hungry feels like.  Oh well, as long as doc is good with it I guess I am too.  Maybe I won't 'gain' any weight at all and when this whole pregnancy is over I will have lost weight from it!
  • I'm 18 weeks and always starving! I literally wake up in the middle of the night with a growling stomach. It's insane.
  • I have been like that for 14 weeks... I'm 17w5d and I KNOW I'm not eating enough... I just can't get myself to be hungry! I have an ensure in the morning because drinking is OK (doctor said ensure was a good option) and then I try and snack on trail mix all day to get protein. It sucks and I feel bad for my husband because I never know what I want for lunch or dinner because I'm NEVER hungry...

doctors keep saying it will get better... so we will see....

@abkenyon ditto I keep telling people I have forgotten what hunger feels like! It's true only way to really describe it. Sometimes I'm not sure I'll know hunger when/if it comes back cause it's been so long. Probably will though...
  • Your body knows what it needs. I'm typically in the same boat. My doctor tells me that I need to gain around 30lbs for my height and weight and at 17.5 weeks I have gained 1 if you weigh me at the end of the day after I've tried hard to eat and drink. But she reassures me that if I do not reach that goal the baby will get what it needs because it is a parasite. Unfortunately it is my body that will suffer. Most data is taken from the depression days when women did not have nutritious food or enough of it as we do. So taking shakes that do not have stimulants that will cross the placenta and are mostly protein and vitamins are great along with as much snacking as you can take. Anything else to stimulate the appetite is a winner. Personally I try snacking on a small granola bar like cliff bars which make me very thirsty (another win cuz drinking enough without being nauseous is hard), gives me sustained energy and stimulates my appetite later.
At the end of the day though, all natural smoothies are my go to. Fruit and veggies with chia seeds, flax and coconut or almond milk typically. I can sip on it for a bit, it's filling and I know it's got the nutrition that both me and the baby need. Plus you can change it up to meet whatever cravings or aversions you may be feeling.
