Essential oils

Does anyone use essential oils? My upper back has been aching so much that I can't sleep. My midwife recommended working with my doula to use essential oils that are safe for pregnancy. I am skeptical but I just purchased a starter kit with a diffuser and some extras. My doula said they would help me sleep and reduce/take away aches and pains so I went for it!

Do you mind me asking what  brand of oils you bought? I used essential oils with my son and they helped me SO much! I used peppermint on my achy muscles and lavender for sleep, I also used the diffuser with citrus oils for my mood as well as to keep my immune system up. I love essential oils, but you have to be cautious. You want to find oils that are 100% pure. The only ones that I know of and trust are Young Living and doTERRA. From my understanding there are others, but just make sure that you do your research. I hope that they help you out as much as they helped me! I also used a lot of them for labor and to induce contractions. There is a good book out called essential baby that helped with mixing up some AMAZING blends that helped my bleeding reduce significantly after my DS' birth. And if you are trying to go natural they help a lot too! I don't know if I could have done it without them!

Yes I use oils. I use lavender for burns, cuts, calming down, etc.

I use OnGuard (Doterra) for building immunity.

Peppermint needs to be used sparingly in pregnancy but that's usually what you'd use for headaches, muscle pain, etc. Deep Blue from Doterra is AMAZING.

I use Past Tense (anxiety blend) to help me go to sleep and stay asleep. Used it the last few nights in a row and I fall asleep faster with it AND sleep through the night.

I was having major pregnancy brain today so I put In Tune on (focus blend) to help me stay focused on my tasks.

I make a bug repellant. I spray my dog with it to prevent ticks and fleas (I do not use commercial flea repellant as they make my pets very ill - this is much safer). It's safe for us to use on ourselves AND I spray the door frames and window frames with it to prevent ants. It kind of smells like citronella but fresher and less chemical-y. Just very citrus and yum.

I make my own cleaners. Lemon is a deodorizer and disinfectant. Water, vinegar, lemon oil and sometimes add lavender for extra scent.

    Yeah I love oils!

@KH7337 thanks for the book recommendation.

I think the book she recommended is the one I also have. It is specifically for Doterra oils. But YL is a great one as well. Always use therapeutic grade as they are purest.

Anyway just wanted to second the recommendation. Got mine on Amazon.

  • YL's is Gentle Baby by Debra Rayburn.

What brand did you buy so we can give you some recommendations and help with your starter kit?
  • I have played around with oils in the past to scent home made lotions and used tea tree to treat acne. I even made a bug repellant for myself. However, mixing them or using them for medicinal purposes seemed overwhelming. I ordered the young living starter kit the comes with ten oils to start with. I also added gentle baby (my doula said that it very relaxing and would be good to diffuse while laboring at home before I go to midwifery) and copiaba (evidently that is nature's ibuprofen). The starter kit includes: Panaway (going to use this with copiaba for my back pain), lavender, peace and calming, lemon, theives, joy, frankincense, purification, tea tree, peppermint, and citrus fresh.

I will have to check out that book. My doula said she would help me with mixtures and there are also several recipes on Pinterest.

I am excited to hear that others have had success using oils.

I am interested in hearing about what blends helped with bleeding after birth.
  • I've been thinking about looking into essential oils. Is Doterra one of those companies where you buy from an individual seller? A friend mentioned to me she bought a starter kit, but I thought she said at a party or something.
  • I can't answer about doterra, but if you buy a starter kit from young living you become a wholesaler and have the option to just buy for yourself at a discount or sell to others.

I've used both YL's PanAway & DoTerra's Deep Blue for aches like that. Both worked for me. I love diffusing, I do lavender every night to help me sleep.

I'll have to dig out my book and see if I can post it soon. It really was amazing. You start to apply it in week 39, and if you go into labor before that then you can just apply it periodically while you are laboring.

doTERRA and Young Living work the same way. You can buy a kit from either and then get more information from a consultant. They are both amazing oils and I personally use both of them because I like a lot of the blends that doTERRA has, but they don't have some of the oils that Young Living has.

  • I have YL oils & have been very happy with them. I have been having some severe shoulder/arm pain and my midwife sent me to the chiropractor today, I feel so so so so much better.

  • I use doterra and Rocky Mountain essential oils. Just make sure you are getting pure oils. They have helped so much for so many things. I make my own dish detergent, hand soap, lotion and shaving cream, along with just diffusing them. Please do your research though!! Some aren't safe during pregnancy, and what's safe in one brand isn't in another due to formulation. But I have already started researching what to use for labor since I want a med free birth.
